Thanks to Coopra R:)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have removed the top disc (with a knife) with was glued on and unscrewed the philips screw on the top and the 'offending' disc came off
As coopra R said, clean this up, undercoat and paint (still waiting for this to dry)
This should be refitted tomorrow

Glad to help ! ;)

You wont need to glue the disc back on - it'll still be sticky enough to bond back !

I thought it wears off if you wear a ring on your left hand. If thats the case, won't it just wear off again if you paint it and continue to wear a ring? (I'm going to do mine after reading this thread, but I don't wear a ring so I guess I'll be ok.)

In most cases it's taken years for the stick to deteriorate !

So if i still have the car in a couple of years, I'll repeat the process..:D

Now that you know that the rings cause the damage....you can always be more careful.....me....I've decided that I'll never marry !

Big thanks to coopra R for his refurb guide

I followed his advice, removed the ring and painted it using a cellulose primer (suitable for painting plastics) that I had lying around, and then used Halfrauds Black Bumper paint (£5.79) to give a matt black that matches the rest of the interior very well and which I intend to use when I get the Golf MkIV sunglasses holder.

I did consider painting the ring silver or red to lift the sombre interior of the LCR a little, but settled in the end for black.

A nice, cheap solution to the paint flaking where the warranty obviously no longer applies and where I didn't want to spend lots of money on a replacement.
