I have the same problem with a high pitched whine on boost.
CupraMVR: Do you have to change the whole turbo or is it possible to just change the fan? And is there any easy way of accessing the turbo without picking the whole engine apart?
So do you remove the turbo from the top of the engine? Seems like a very tight fit and very hard to reach down there. I've got a '02 Cupra R btw. The mechanic at VW thought it would take a few hours to change the turbo because he had to take the engine apart to reach the turbo...
only need a few parts off the top half of the engine the rest is done from under the car. exhaust off water pipe oil feed and return pipes. turbo intake pipe and that's pretty much it.
