Leon 1.4 TSI has gone. moved back to an A3!

Hi guys,

Im a regular reader on here although I don't post much.

I bought a Leon 1.4TSI a few months ago, and came from a 57 plate A3. The few issues it had were really bugging me, I highlighted some on here, and it really was not as good as the A3 (I regretted selling it!).

My girlfriend had an A3 1.6 Technik, and its financed so rather than her give it back (PCP just finished), Ive sold the Leon and bought it off her.

Now, my main concerns were that the 1.4TSI engine felt way too underpowered in a car of that weight. The girlfriends A3 was only a 105bhp (I think), but it felt more nippy and revvy than the Leon (in fact, once I followed her brother driving it down a sliproad onto the motorway, and he was flooring it, so I revved the nuts off the Leon and was barely pulling!). So, I to improve things, I had the Leon remapped, and in all honesty, Id be suprised if it made 10bhp - claimed figure was 140bhp after a remap I think - and I think thats a little optimistic. It wasn't economical either, I think I got around 28mpg in my time of ownership.

I do want to say, that I got a few faults sorted and it was reliable, no more issues. I also think that it was good value for money, its not upto Audis standards, but you get what you pay for. For instance, Id rather have the Leon than an Astra. Its a good forum on here, and I dont want to upset anyone, but I just wanted to say that I just didn't fall for the Leon personally.

On a plus side, I sold the car privately, and told him to join the forum. He was a middle aged gent, and he liked Seats, he had just come from a diesel Toledo I think, so I hope he looks after it. Although I didnt fall for the car, its always nice to know its gone to a good home.

The girlfriends getting an A5 on Saturday, so until then we're sharing the A3 (and Im putting up with her **** CD's)

Hope Im still welcome on the forum even though Ive moved back to the darkside

Not gonna lie mate, if the 1.4tsi didn't keep up with a 105bhp a3 then i think your leon was a 1.2tsi! I can keep up with 1.6 petrols easy in my standard 1.2tsi.

As for the remap, the 1.2tsi is 105bhp and can be remapped up to 135bhp, so to only get 140bhp out of a 1.4tsi you must have taken it to a bad place!

However like you say, cabin quality is better in audi's, and you pay more for it, so it should be!

Each to their own, that's why there's so many cars!

Everyone has the right to give their opinions, mate, and I for one would never hate on you for or get upset from that. It is kind of weird, to be honest, that you were not able to keep up with the Audi's 1.6 petrol engine even though you had a 1.4 TSi. I mean I have owned three cars so far, Nissan Tiida, Mazda 3, and Seat Leon and they were all 1.6 petrol and I can tell you that TSi engines are much faster, including the 1.2 TSi, if I'm not mistaken, although admittedly I've never raced one, it should be faster since it is turbo charged and the figures say it is faster. Would't you say so, Jarre?

I'm sorry that you didn't have a good experience with the Leon, but hopefully you'll enjoy your Audi. When it comes to interior quality, as Jarre said, you get what you pay for. Add a little more money and buy a BMW or a Mercedes and you'll find how much of a better quality interior-wise they are than an Audi; it's all about the money. And to be honest with you, I feel the Leon's interior is actually quite nice and they give you tons of features for much less than most other cars with even less features!

Only recently did Audis get TSi engines where I live, and back in 2010 I beat the Audi A3 1.6 with my Mazda 3 every time I raced it and it cost almost twice as much.

You might not have had luck with that 1.4 Leon, but hopefully one day you might drive one with a different engine and change your mind about it. :D

You're most certainly welcome here, mate!

Unlucky. I love my tsi, itll keep up with most things within reason and more than likely smoke anything near 1.8/(2.0 depending on make) mpg varies between 30 (when being an idiot) and mid 50s when obviously not. Could probably do with a hearty remap like most other engines tho!

What reliability issues did you have?

I agree with Jarre, Are you sure it was a 1.4 TSI and not a 1.2? What was the reg so we can look it up? It's sold now so it doesn't matter about posting the reg.

My brother has a Leon 1.4 TSI and it goes quite well, the thing is the power delivery is low down so revving the tits off of it doesn't get the best out of it. 1.4 Turbo engines make power and torque lower down the rev range than an 8v 1.6 does. I think the sweet spot for changing up is about 4.5k revs on my bro's one.

A few years back I had an Audi A3 1.6 8v and it was poo, well made, decent handling just an awful engine. I would be lucky to out drag a 50cc scooter in it..

Quite amazed the 1.4 TSi felt worse you must have had one firing on two cylinders??? Or are you talking about the diesel not the petrol which may feel quicker due to the extra torque?

If you cant keep up with a 1.6 a3 and your getting 28mpg then something is wrong :L My stock 1.4tsi is pretty much even with 1.9tdi 130bhp a3 mk1 untill i get to the high revs then i pull away and i get over 45mpg every single day! i managed 63mpg on a run once! The leons do look much inproved when ya stick leather bits and an armrest tho, I love mine, i allways give it a second look when i park it up somewhere.
