I currently own a mountune focus st 260, its great fun, however 28 mpg is a little costly. That’s what the trip computer shows after 1500 miles.

I’ve been looking at the lean 170 diesel as a replacement. I know the mpg question has been asked many times, however; I’m interested in the real world mpg.

The focus will do 35+ (on a run i.e 70), but I’m interested in the number on the trip computer if you don’t reset for 1000 miles or so.

Over the past 13 months of owning my FR TDI, I have never failed to achieve roughly 44mpg on my 25 mile each way daily commute.

This can be broken down in one direction as:
6 minutes town driving @ 30mph
4 minutes A road nsl @60mph
2 minutes town driving @30mph
5 minutes dual carriage way @ 70mph :whistle:
10 minutes narrow twisty hilly A road nsl @50mph
12 minutes town driving @ 40mph

So as you can see my daily grind really is a right old mix for the trip computer to work out :) How does that compare to your real world drive?

My commute can be 5 miles town, 10 miles a road or b roads all the way, I alternate between the two. The focus is crap round town, low 20’s, however 35 is achievable on the motorway with some a/b roads thrown in. I do about 12-14k a year.

I’m trying to decide if the extra mpg (10 –15), tax etc, is worth the loss of performance and glorious noise the 5 cylinder engine makes.

So any 170 owner, do you thinks its worth giving up this car. I will be looking to keep the leon for 5+ years
 
Average 38mpg combined for me, and 42mpg on a run, which is sh*t really for diesel. That's not why people buy them though.
Same old story, if you want heat you have to put coal on the fire!!!
 
These figures are kind of putting me off, reading some of the threads isn’t filling me with confidence. I was expecting much better economy from the diesel.
 
The FR derv is very powerful for it's capacity, there is only one other 2.0 diesel that I know of that has more power and that has 2 turbos (BMW 123d)

The 140 derv is better on fuel (48-52MPG over say 1500 miles) but it's slower.

There is a lot more difference that you realise between 28MPG and 48MPG it's almost double so it's going to cost almost half the amount of money to run.
 
How much are you going to loose on the Focus on depreciation when you sell?

Albeit roadtax is cheaper, you may struggle to make the money back on spending less on diesel - you just have to crunch the numbers. You'd probably make just as much by driving the Focus like a saint - lets face it if you are always ragging the **** out of the diesel the MPG will still suffer quite a bit, so if this is your driving style, the 55mpg ranges arn't going to be achievable.

Insurance may however make a big difference, just depends. If that is significantly cheaper then it may be a go'er.

Suggest you put a spreadsheet together to work out all the costs of the cars (fuel/tax/insurance/servicing/tyres/MOT/Depreciation Charge) and then consider your options. For me, a Fiesta ST would have been cheaper than my Leon (due to ticket price), even with the reduced fuel economy (34mpg vs 45mpg), but the Leon was the nicer car and won the day.
 
I do mainly motorway miles at 70 on cruise control and my overall average over a few thousand miles is generally between 41 and 43 MPG.
 
Just sold my FR TDi - 2.5 years and 52000 miles average 42 MPG - lots of motorway but also lots of fun times

You get 28mpg from a ST???????????????????

I have had 2 ST's, one was Dreamscienced which i got about 18 MPG, and the other was bog standard and that averaged around 17 MPG.

When i had a Leon FR TDI 170, i got around 35-38 MPG.
 
I always mystified by these very low mpgs from the focus st. I don’t drive partially economically and I never get less than 300 miles from the tank.
 
I believe the facelifted FR is much better on fuel, up to 53MPG combined so look into that.

Anyone here got any real world figures for the 170CR ?????
 
Only single turbo 2.0 Diesel I can think of that is more powerful is the 175ps 2.0 unit used by Renault :)

Or the soon to be replaced 2 litre single turbo BMW engine. Thats got 177bhp...even though the replacements rolling that back to 163bhp:confused:
 
This is one of those silly questions really. A diesel lawnmower if u push it hard will do very little mpg but drive it like a granny and it would last forever without filling it up. Same with our FR TDI's. If I granny drive everywhere I see 55-65mpg. Doing a bit more like normal speeds i see 50-52. Driving like its supposed to be driven (as it is an FR) i get 35-45mpg.

Same on every car ive ever owned. Had a V6 Hyundai Coupe before my FR and if u floored that everywhere u could see the fuel gauge dropping (Dial said around 6mpg) all the time. Drive it like a granny and i could still average around 40mpg.

The difference is u prob will never get a TDI FR under 30mpg no matter how hard u push it. A petrol with any reasonable power if pushed will drop down into single figures straight away!
 
But is it, as most of our FR's are putting out almost 200bhp in standard trim [B)]

I'm currently getting 41.6mpg average on setting # 2, which monitors it over 10,000 miles.

What do you mean almost? ;)

I've never actually seen a 175Dci Dyno'd - But Renault are renowned for being a little optimistic on their power claims!
 
Couple more:

Mazda 3 2.2 is 182 Bhp
Mondeo 2.2 TDCI is 172 Bhp

Still fancy a remapped 123D for my next car though :D
