Just been told (not sure how reliable the source) that the Leon Cupra (not sure if it was an R or not) was in Top Gears top 10 worst cars for understeer. What are peoples thoughts? Do you agree or disagree?

Its easily solved with a few adjustments on a laser tracker. The top dog mechanic at BBT's was going through it with me when i was last there and he told me how to set the leon so it no longer understeers as bad (as its only an input seat put in for 'safety')

i take it this was to do with camber adjustments?

Don't know about the LCR, but the pre-big-bumper LC with 16" wheels came with P6000 tyres. These are not particularly good in the dry and become dangerous in the wet. To be honest, I'm suprised it even got around the corner :p

I saw an article several years ago where they reviewed tyres for a normal car (2.0 Mondeo) and a high performance car (BMW M3). With the best wet tyres, the Mondeo was lapping quicker then the M3 on poor wet tyres.

I think it spoke very well for the LC, that it was almost as quick as the CTR when on the factory P6000's

My opinion is SEAT must of use some kind of olive oil filled dampers in the Mk1 Leons. They went shite on my Cupra, and subsqeuntly the R ones went bad too, loads of roll and became really crashy.

Since i've fitted coilovers and ARB's, the transformation is like black and white.

Yeah a little adjustment on the camber and a few other bits extended and pushed back such as ball joints i think (not sure on this as he cought me on the hope when he was telling me) and seeing as they couldnt do it (no 4 laser tracker) i wasnt going to repeat it to someone else and risk f*cking it up as i got the info wrong

Watching 5th gear and they had the LCR lapping their tight anglesea circuit slower than a BMW X5?? Probably shows up the poor handling more.

Before anyone mentions bad understeer, try driving a 2.5v6 Vectra! After owning one for 3 years, a shopping trolley would have been an upgrade

I had a Honda DelSol and it is "supposed" to be a "sports" car.....

Handling was SO shite. Lowered it and it was sweet. But standard, handled like a drunk duck on stilts! LOL!

:roflmao: an MG ZR handling better than a LCR! they are shocking, rover 25 suspension with stiffer springs

MG ZS 2.5 V6 handling was superb. Fancy dampers that were 2-stage, firm and progressive but had some sort of valve that allowed them to compress rapidly if you hit a pothole or similar - apparantly similar setup to touring cars????

My old Honda Civic 1.8VTi had superb hadling too, mind you double wishbones all round and front upper strutbrace as standard helped.

My Stock LC handling is sh*te, but once the hideous expense of moving has subsided that'll get sorted.

The steering on mine appears to be a bit rubbish - even my Vauxhall Astra Mk4 was better at going round corners. In addition, I have P6000 on the front and GSD3s on the back - imagine what thats like in the wet!!!

Still, its better than the Astra in every other way!

Much better than the other way round. At least it does predictably crap things...

The MG ZR 160 does handle well I must admit. Only a Rover 25 chassis yes, but it does the job! Not sure about the other ZR models though. My Ibiza is the same for chronic understeer. I swear ive had it understeering at walking pace before!!! I know it is sortable though. Coilovers and rear ARB would be my way of approaching it. Just trying to decide whether im going to keep it at the moment before I spend anymore

Coming from my previous car, a ten year old base model escort, my LC handles like its on rails. :) It's got the S3 lower strut brace and GSD3's but I have no idea how much difference this makes as they were all already fitted when I got it.
I expect if I had ever owned a decent car before then I would have something to complain about.

Back from the dead
In that understeer test they pointed the car at a sharp bend, turned off the ESP switch then gunned it at 55mph at the corner.

We know the worn p-Zero tyres do not handle water well and tend to aquaplane horribly - imagine the state of the tyres on a journalist test car.

Clarkson's not a fan of the R and in the Top Gear mag even though the Mk2 Leon is out and is included in review it still still says something in the "don't be fooled by comment" like:
The LCR, no plans for a new one until replacement Cupra in 2006, but best avolided and go for the.....(can't remember).

To me the understeer test was a no brainer, and they shouldn't be surprised. For the limitations of the chassis and OE kit its alright as long as you're aware of the limits.

Depends what they were using as a yardstick for a cars handling. As they have come a long way in the last couple of years, VAG's new breed of A3, Golf, Leon, Octavia are a real step forward.
Any ideas what the other 10 were?
