If anyone in the wakefield area has an old knackered box they don't want send it my way so i can strip it. I used to build gearboxes so would be interested to see what's going off inside them.

I was £1340 for a rebuilt gearbox for my Astra vxr. I really hope the LCR doesn't go the same way going by a lot of gearbox problems threads on here lately lol.

Dan, I see that as 10 hours to get the box out of the car, disassembled, bearing housings repaired (and I've no idea how they do that - and until they've got the box out they won't know how bad the damage is), box reassembled, back in the car and everything checked out. 10 hours doesn't seem like a bad estimate to me.

I'm damned sure I couldn't do it in 20 minutes, even with a fully equipped workshop: and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to cut corners on a customers gearbox. Reassembly, especially with new bearings, means shimming up the input shaft and layshafts again, not something you can do in five minutes.

The box is held together with about 20 m8 bolts. 1 circlip on the other side and the gearset just lifts out. He's getting charged £450 + 10 hours labour?!? So theyre charging twice for repairing the box, bearings and syncros from TPS are just over the £100 mark. So £350 labour to refurb the box. Im sorry but that's extortionate, seeing as they're charging 5.5 hours to do it.

the parts are costing £450 to repair it and i was told 10 hours labour which includes pulling it out checking it over repairing and putting back together - also having the clutch and flywheel done so i guess that will be included in the 10hours labour + the £395 for those parts. Was told that was a fair price "/ ive used them alot and they pretty genuine so i trust them to do a good job at right price. just sods law it decides to piss down the whole time they have it whilst im using walking power everywhere!! grrr

Mine is at 75K and I also got the whining noises coming from my gearbox in 1st,4th 5th and 6th while engine breaking in gear. It dissapears under acceleration. I have no idea of the extent of the damage within my box since I haven't had the box stripped. Am in Hertfordshire area. Any suggestions guys as to where I can take it to have it looked at?

Guys try All Gears in Worksop for a rebuild quote, they rebuilt my LCR gearbox for ALOT less than the prices being quoted. :)

Doesn't make a difference on year, if its going to happen it will happen, the longer you leave it the more internal damage it will cause (Resulting you have to replace the gearbox casing) The noise is like a faint grinding noise when gear breaking (de accelerating while car in gear) From personal experience if you find your car making the noise have it looked at before damage gets worse which will then will increase repair bill.
