Any chance this is caused by the momentum of a heavy flywheel?

I wounldnt of thought so because of the high compression of diesels, but it could be. Does it on mine too btw.
Don't think so.

Bizarrely enough, I noticed mine do this the other day. Revved it up fairly high whilst out of gear, when I lifted off it continued revving for a second or so before slowing down.

Mine does it too. Cane it in 1st, dip the clutch for the gear change and it revs its nuts off for about 1 sec before dropping. I think its a characteristic of the car and don't really worry too much about it. I'm more interested in snatching 2nd cleanly for a good stint upto a nice fast change into 3rd and onto the wave of torque that pushes me to the speed limit (and beyond if I'd let it ;)).

just a little off topic but what revs does the speed limiter cut in at on the 150 tdi engine... i have taken mine upto around 5000rpm once or twice when i have been carried away and it doesnt seem to know when to stoprevving... all the petrol cars i have owned have always had a rev limiter.. and you knew when you hit it..

4900 mine will rev into 5000 5100 and shows no sign of stopping alhough as i said in my earlier post i have only done it once or twice by accident....
