VW have been threatening to release an R36 Passat on us shortly. THat might go well in the Golf.
It all stems from the current throw away/disposable culture of, done that, move on to the next. I went to buy a new DVD player and the salesman asked me what I had. I told him it was an earlier version of the Arcam and he said, "oh that's 2 generations old now, its not worth scrap". Strangely when I bought it from him 2 years earlier he assured me it was worth every penny of the £1200 I paid for it.
Thing is the retail industry is shortly about to learn that the credit bubble has burst, and people won't have the same funds to tap to keep re-buying stuff in the next 5 years, just because they've polished the turd and squeezed another x% out of it.
I sound like a miserable old git, but when the Golf Mk1 / 2's lasted 10 years it had a great residual. All this progress as we call it is just f@cking us over.
agree totally its all because we want the best thing and while the human race continues to want the best and pay for the best the retail industry not just in cars but in laptops, home entertainment and mobile phones will continue to evolve every month, I remember someone famous saying we will never fill a gigabyte and now look what we have ipods that have 40gb hard drives. I dont think you sound like a miserable old git at all i think this year a lot of people will look at what they are buying more and say do i really need this and over the next few years people will struggle to stay afloat as the credit bubble burst takes its toll. However the big issue that everyone has with cars is the green issue the first car manufacture that makes a fully working affordable solution to petrol and diesel that also delivers some style and performance will no doubt reap the benefits, i dont think the car industry will struggle as much as the home entertainment industry thanks to the green issue
My view is that the stuff that's being released in current cars doesn't actually benefit me any more in day to day driving and as such the next trim or upgraded bells and whistles won't make me any more keen to part with my hard earned.
I don't buy on finance, havent' for years and won't take out loans anymore either - so what i buy is bought with my own cash. For the same reason i don't have blueray, DAB, £1000+ dvd players, I won't spend £30k of my own money on a new car unless I have another £90k in the bank spare.
The problem ( as ever) is that we're being released 'new' stuff not as it becomes available but as it becomes viable to release it and even then it's down to where the marketing people think we are on the product life cycle. Must sell current stock before releasing 'better' stuff. In the run up to the better stuff, they'll trickle some of the better gadgets into the old stock just so you can see what you're missing and tempt a few more people to buy.
Then as we're seeing, 6 months later the 'new' improved and all better model comes out - the king is dead .... long live the king!

Out of interest, what exchange rate was used to get the £30k?
I work it out at £31k at current exchange rates and that is with the straight exchange. You need to take in to account rip off Britain prices on top of that
Just a very quick and dirty conversion using one of the freebies off Google. I suppose there are tax and OTR variations in UK compared to European counterpart.

but terribly unreliable - astronomical 4500mile servicing costs and a warranty that is full of holes lol

£ for £, I would chose an Evo over a Cupra any day of the week based on a new car. Remember you can't use the old interior argument with the Evo as the centre part of the Leon dash is rank.

Maybe they have increased the servicing now I haven't looked at them for a while but having owned both a seven and an eight I can confirm they were 4500 miles.
Some of the shocking bills I had were....
Evo 7 Clutch Failed at 4000 miles - not covered by warranty £1250 parts only from dealer (i fitted a 3rd party)
Evo7 AYC Control Unit failed - not covered by warranty £850
AYC Pump failed £1700
These are just a couple of sore ones!
Lol quite possibly the dearest car I ever owned! Evo interior was much worse than the leons. I saw the light and went german after that experience and since then haven't gone back! Moved to an RS4 after the evo and since that have stuck with 911's - a proper drivers car! - which is what my 30k would go on. GT3 mk1s are now sub 40k - in my book thats serious smiles per pound

I'm with you. I read something by Clarkson on Times Online the other day, and whilst I enjoy his writing style, the review was just drivel. I know we all have prejudices about things (hence why I down own a BMW even though I love them), but I tend to find that the Top Gear make the show about themselves rather than being an objective car show.
As for the Evo X running costs / service plan: £400 (3yrs / 30,000 miles) here
It now doesn't look like its made from bric-a-brac and egg boxes inside too. Lacks a bit of class, but its one hell of a car!
I've never quite understood the Leon dash being panned around here. Now owning one, I really don't get it. Going from the new Leon to looking at the dash in my old LCR it's comical. The wife has a Clio and that is miles worse in every way. I guess it's just not 'traditional'.
There is no way Seat would put out a 30k car in this country, especially when the most expensive current model is 20-21k and it's basically that with leather and a bit faster - that story is definitely Europe only.
On another note, those seats in the Pirelli edition are horrendous.

My mates old man has a 911 and he says the same about it. He also has a MK3 Colour Concept MK3 Golf GTi with a TT engine and a big turbo with closer to 400bhp which he will state is faster than the Porker. His daily runner is a MK5 Golf GTi with Revo, full Milltek and uprated suspension.
He has a fuel pump ready to go on to the Golf and is after the S3 intercooler, but his big mod for this year is an LSD. This would not make up for the Evo's four wheel drive, but it makes one heck of a difference on the MK3. He will at that point have a Golf Version of the Copa for much much less money.
I was just thinking that if you took a Cupra, added an LSD, full exhaust, uprated intercooler, uprated suspension, uprated intake, uprated fuel pump and remapped it you would have a reasonable 340bhp car, and it would cost approx £5,000 to do this. Add this to the £19.5k base price and you have a car that is sub S3 price (£24.5k) which is quick and could handle its power a bit better than standard car. Thing is though, all this aside, an Evo X with the same power would probably still be quicker from A to B.
