loud banging noise from engine

hi im new to seatcupra.net and i dnt know if this is the right place to post!

i brought a 1998 seat ibiza gti cupra 2 days ago i drove it 90 miles home and it was fine took it out again and i started to hear a loud banging noise coming from the engine and since its got louder so it isnt being used at the mo.

so yesterday i fired up the car and there was the banging so had a look under the engine and when i put my hand under the started motor and lifted it up the noise stopped so i took off the started motor and had a good look and it seemed fine also i tested the motor and it works fine.

so i put it all back and the noise is still there, when u turn the ignition it started but not every time you start it but i does start when you are driving the car the faster you go the faster and louder the sound gets, the car goes through the gears fine and its had a refurbed gear box fitted about 5 months ago.
but say i started it up and the noise starts and i push the clutch in it stop let it back out and it started again, at first i thought maybe the drive shaft has come loose but it is fine.

any ideas would be very gratefull

well if its happenign when clucth is pushed in maybe a shagged clutch

yeah thats a point put handbrake on then 1st gear and bring clutch up slowly and down and see how bad engine rocks

thing is when its jacked up it doesnt make the noise like its takng the strain off something

Buy a new engine mount! Don't wait for the engine to fall out like I did... twice.

If you're not sure which mount has gone, just take it to a garage. Parts aren't excessively expensive.

is there 2 engine mounts theres one at the front which goes across the front and in the middle it sits on a rubber mount

3 of them, front, gearbox ...and back. labour is expensive though.

is there anything that i can do to it is it a matter of something coming loose because that wouldnt make sense as when its jacked up its not doing it

not doing what when jacked up? not banging?! bit of an exercise driving while jacked up i'd say! (i'm joking!) i'd say an engine mount is a good shout myself.

yh when its jacked and engine is ticking over it dont make the noise as it would if it wernt jacked up

u sure its not just the downpipe heatshield?

no its worse than that its more like a clanging noise coming from the passanger side of the engine but i did find come thing the other day its was a piece of metal which was flapping about it was like a shield which shouldof been bolted on but something has been chomping away at it it was near where the drive shaft meets the gearbox
