Max Power AMP I can run?

What would be the maximum power AMP I can run on a 500w wiring kit?

I have heard that the AMPs don't produce anywhere near the stated "Max Power" so I was wandering if I could go higher than a 500w AMP (i.e. something like 700w)

Ok I'm confused...

I have a 5 metre long power cable (on the packet it says a 500w wiring kit), how do I work out the biggest AMP I can use with my wiring?

You need to know the gauge of the wiring, the fact that the packet says 500w means nothing.

Ok it's an 8-gauge wiring kit

So you need to use the table at the bottom of the page I linked to. Which calculates to 0-20a over 4m. 8awg really is too thin to run a lot of amps imo

I was told it could easily run my Alpine MRP-M350 which has a max output of 700w.

8awg should only be used for up to 130wrms.

Sorry what does wrms mean? Is it the watts the AMP actually uses?

It's Watts RMS which is the real power of an amp. Rather than the VERY inflated Max/Peak or whatever else some manufacturers use to make their amps look more powerful on the shelf.

WRMS is the only real indicator of the power an amp puts out when comparing them. I have an amp that can put out a real 350wrms into each of it's two channels, all day without a struggle, that probably equates to about 200000000w in some manufacturers measurements....

would I take the 4ohm reading or the 2ohm? I saw on your website to take the 4ohm but I'm still not sure.
Also to clarify the more channels you have, the less power output there is in each?

4 ohm normally to work out the cabling needed. but you can use 2ohm if you like. 8awg cable isn't good enough for that amp either way.

Can you just chop off the end of a wire so that you can have the ability to run larger AMPs?
Last question: is the remote cable always 18-gauge yeh?

Yeah 4awg will do fine for the amp you're looking at.
