Sounds like the media system is trying to mount the usb before the stick is powered up so it fails. Maybe try plugging a powered usb device (phone) and see if the issue replicates.

Yeah try a powered device and see if there is the same issue.

While we are on topic of the media system, does it support WAV files by any chance? Just converted loads of albums in FLAC format to WAV and now im wondering if it even supports that lol

It's lit up, that means it has power - not a lot else! So that means of the 4 USB connections, 2 of them are made.....

Yes, it's getting power, but is it getting power before or after the system is trying to mount it?

I think you may be correct - I had just the same random intermittent problem with the USB input on my previous car, a Vauxhall Insignia. I used to have to unplug the USB memory stick and then plug it in again for it be seen again by the media system. I tried several USB memory sticks, and they all did the same thing. If I remember correctly, my old iPod Classic, using the same (and only) USB socket on my Vauxhall Insignia, also randomly failed to be seen by the media system.

Thanks to all who have responded for some very interesting comment on what is obviously a fairly widespread issue.

I think I will have a go at loading music onto an SD card as that seems a more reliable method.

Incidentally, I mentioned this issue to a mate with a Ford Mondeo and he has had the same stick plugged in for 4 years with no problem at all.

So, loaded up an SD card and so far working ok for just over a week. (On one occasion the display said "No media installed" on switching on but then recognised the card.)

That seems to depend on how fast you start the car - if I switch ignition on and allow glow plug light to go out before starting - no probs.

If car is already warm and I crack her straight up - I occasionally get the "no media installed" for a few secs.

Hopefully won't have this issue when my car arrives as I always use a USB, does the cable come standard with car to connect the USB?

Ah ok, cool. The reason for the doubt was that on all of the demo cars I had tried they only ever had the ipod cable in the glove box.
With my car I only found the usb cable, I asked the dealers about the ipod one and they went off and found one without a question. I expected them to swap it for the usb one i had but they just gave it to me.

Same issue here. I opted to go the SD card route and all is well again.

Although, if you do need to use the USB adapter I also found that if you don't actually switch off the head unit with the power button, i.e., just let it go off when you take the key out of the ignition, the USB remains live, and this solves the problem.

Rebooting the head unit by holding the power button for 15-20 seconds also remounts the USB.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the largest size USB Memory stick or SD Card you should use is 32Gb, can anyone confirm. My preference would be 64GB if possible? Also, is it still the consensus that using an SD card rather than a USB stick leads to less glitches?

I've had the same issue but it's happened more often using a usb stick so I tend to stick to sd cards now.
