Looks like Cupra R ownership may be coming to an end
Following a test drive of a Mk 3 Cupra am seriously considering changing, just trawling through to get the right figures now.... then me and t'GF will be getting our heads together..
current R has done 30 k over two years and other than tyres has only had two faults , mouldy bonnet lining ( sorted under warranty but mouldy again, surprise surprise) and the external temp probe went haywire ( again, sorted under warranty) It's been a real blast to drive, a lot more raw than previous FR, we've had some great times in it , and solo I've done the Evo loop a few times , plus a lot of the other roads in Wales ;) scared myself silly more than once but still great fun. North Yorkshire roads also , particularly up to Whitby ;)
Downsides ? a voracious appetite for super unleaded ( although not too bad as a daily driver) the poxy soundthingy which was disconnected, sooo much better now! Tyres v potholes, guess which won? various creaks and rattles ( you get used to it) Stereo's not the best - or rather sound isn't, steering kick when hoofing it, knobheads who just want to race you and will try anything to get past, thats about it really.
plus points - well, 265 for a start :D the grin I get on a winding road , the noise it makes, particularly with the back seats down, ( pity it looks like I won't get to fit a cat back bah) the looks of terror on my GF's face... the laugh I get when people can't find the rear door handles, the looks it gets ( why, WHY , WHY are they not doing speed blue in the mk 3!!) and many, many more.
Looking at a mk 3 Cupra 280 , manual, media , spare and leather at the moment, in Emocion Red.

Good report mate ,and surprise surprise the mouldy bit under bonnet is one of the only problems I've had ..well only a few little niggly things since from new .
Thank goodness it's been really reliable and the re-map has helped a lot ...especially when I need to destroy some twat in say a BMW !! (Not all models of course ;) Still awaiting to have a go at a Scooby !! Well older versions at least ;)

Funnily enough I test drove the 280 DSG when my local mate ..or dealer had one and really liked it ,but have since found out that the new owner(who traded in a Leon Mk2 fr ) has had a few problems with leaks of some kind ..not sure from where .
But anyway, I reckon you've chosen well, and if you go for it good luck as I'm sure it's a cracking car. I wish I'd driven it longer ,but I'd probably go for a manual if I did venture into the Mk3 as I don't like Auto's.

At least we will keep your brummy humour on here ...lol !

I test drove a Mk3 and I loved it as well im just not sure on the looks :(
I much prefer the curvier Mk2. That's just my opinion :)

But great write up on the Mk2 :)

Not gone for DSG, prefer manual, just personal choice. the DSG we test drove was great, liked the "fart" noise but, I can make the same noises a lot cheaper....;) and Brummie humour? you try living here you'll either go mad or die laughing...

Wasn't sold on the looks at first, still not to be honest, although didn't like the Mk2 at first so perhaps it'll grow on me... it was the way it drove that sold it for both of us, the R has always felt, well, a bit 'edgy' if you know what I mean, great fun to drive and drive hard, but the GF ( main user) never really got used to the torque steer, which while not as bad as others I've driven, still was present, When I had the MK3 the sales guy was more than happy for me to give it the full beans both in a straight line and round bends, no evidence of torque steer at all. GF test drove it on her normal commute and was more than happy. ( which is important ;) )

Hold out for a potential R Andy ;)
That was the original plan, but am still struggling to see how a new R it'll be priced against the Golf R, and the Cupra 280 itself. if, and it's a big if, it's 4wd I can't seeing it being less than 30k, and that could bring other vehicles into the reckoning. as a few have said, myself included, the latest Cupra doesn't look as different to the standard Leon as the R did.
However, I'm hoping that will become an attraction as it flies past people who mistake it for a 1.4.... at the speed limit of course ;)
Given that the last three cars we've had have lasted around 2 years, we reckon that , if there is to be an R, it may be launched in that time, so we'll see in 2016....
Still disappointed about the lack of colour choice, hence the decision to go back to a red car. Decision not made yet, but I think she's sold....
especially after the time I took to explain the LSD and why the rear discs were vented, although she said she understood I have my doubts....

some might say thats a bad thing.......... :p

I think you'd probably be looking at seeing the R maybe late 2015 if there is to be one.

I still don't think I'm totally sold on the looks of the Mk3 Cupra but I've not driven one and everyone seems to rave about them so they are obviously a very capable car, tuneable no doubt too :)

I was like you ( no, not young and virile) until I drove one. Changed my mind completely.
try blag a test drive

Nah, my mind is already made up dude.

I can certainly see me coming back to the brand once I've a little play away :cheeky: but for now at least my Seat ownership is no more.

Just enjoying driving my old mans Focus estate :)

Nice colour the Red ,that's what I drove and does look the dogs...

I think manual is the best choice as well .

Good Luck mate if you go for it .

Glad you have found a suitable replacement for the R. Well done for choosing a proper gearbox too

Managed to get a test drive of a manual for today, if it drives as well as the DSG one then it looks like the deal is on, other than trying to sort out the spec. GF has changed her mind and it looks like it'll be standard seats , media system, spare wheel & black line pack. However, that may change.... again
Apparently, we're. 'trying to keep costs down as we're getting married next year' so I helpfully suggest going for the 3 door ( our kids are grown up, and there is zero chance of any more, and grandkids don't look likely atm either ) but that suggestion received the 'stare of death' .... WOMEN!!!

Tell your girlfriend where to stuff it, if you don't get the spec you want then there will be no marriage ;)
She's just realised that the MK3 has no aerial, so nowhere to put the Mickey Mouse topper. She'll get over it. :D
Na can't be brutal, she puts up with me, and has done for a while, only one that has...... ;)

The upgraded seats are so comfy though :(
Tbh the standard seats in the MK 3 Cupra seem more comfortable than the ones in the R, mind you I'm a bit of a chubby fka so it may just be me... Who needs lowering springs!! :D
