Yes you can remove them as I've changed my black for chrome. I mean there's no screws holding them in. Just prise cover from mirror using a flat knife (think that's how I did mine)
There is a hole right at the bottom of the casing. Stick a screwdriver through the hole and push the handle forwards.
This releases the spring clip that's holding the mirror casing to the base. You'll probably find you have to push the mirror glass flat so it's clear of the casing as you slide it upwards.
