Hi all,

I'm looking at getting an Ibiza again, a 1.6 this time as i cant really afford to run or insure a cupra at the time being.

Looking at picking one up that's done 71k, and just wondered if any 1.6 guys out there or anyone else had general issues to look for expect?

cheers in advance for any info

Hi Nev,

I've had my 1.6 for best part of year now, would be happy to think of some things I've had off the top of my head.

Obviously body and interior problems go hand in hand:

- Check for rust below the rear wiper
- Same arounf the door window seals

- inside can get tatty easy, luckily mine is pretty dam good
- hinge covers on the seat break easy, these are cheap to replace and look hell of a lot better than none
- seats are easily marked probably by water this can be steam cleaned if not too far gone

Engine and Transmission:

- Clutch if ragged, after I bought it the gears started sticking can either be the gear linkage (cheap fix or clutch :( mine had a new one not so long ago

- Temp troubles, Heater troubles, thermostat could be gone or a temp sensor or a blockage

thats a few off the top of my head I'm sure some people can think of some more.

Hope this helps

Obviously these are quite common problems for mk3s in general other than that its pretty bullet proof, Im actually thinking of selling mine

51 Reg
68k
really clean
new clutch
black
cd changer

replaced bits of broken and missing trim
about to have 2 new tires and some chips sorted out

tape player doesnt work (who cares)

I havent managed to see a better one yet, the black makes the skirts and splitters blend in better without the need for paint

How much are you selling for? At the moment im looking at one on the cheap, with a few problems for me to sort out such as the window motor and replacing the bright momo steering wheel back to standard

It has a cupra front bumper on it, so its going to be a small project to take it to a cupra replica and fix some of the issues, but for the money i cant complain.

Hopefully ill be able to tell if the gearbox/clutch is on the way out after driving it

No worries dude,

Was looking for top end as shes nearly mint and thats what Im going for to finish to that standard.
Sounds good, ive seen loads on ebay recently actually and most are shitters.

I wanted to keep it standard but would love to swap the alloys for the cupra ones.

Yeh ideally i wanted to pick up a mint condition one, but im just trying to keep my costs down. Gonna take some work on cleaning her up and sorting out some of the niggles and bad styling. But hoping with scrapyard help and a bit of effort ill have a nice one by the end of it.

Fair shout, i had the cupra alloys on my ibiza before and cant say i was a huge fan.

Yeah I know what you mean, the sport alloys arent half bad way better that the smaller engined option alloys, just need the right tyres on them I think. luckily mine arent curbed at all

Nice, i think the alloys on this from pictures are about the best thing going with the car lol

Do you also know if a lot of the 1.4 parts, ie steering wheel, window motor, gear knob are the same on the 1.6?

Why are you selling if you dont mind me asking?

I've got a factory leather steering wheel option on mine. The gear knob is also different leather with a pitted leather look knob and silver colar.

I imagine its all exactly the same just minus the trim differences, so they will all fit.

Going to buy leon cupra, miss having 4 doors and a larger car!

Yeah I imagine as there was more variations of engine modles and the sport was the only 1.6, dont forget the tdi sport is the same too body/interior wise too so maybe search for parts for the tdi too!

ah right, thanks for that didnt realise it was all the same interior etc. thats ideal then hopefully i should have a bit more luck with searching for the bits id need off the 1.6 and 1.6.

Just hope nothing serious goes on it before i get it back to a nice standard
