Mk3 1.6 Disc Size & Calliper Carrier Q's + Conversion Update.

Hey Guys,

Does anyone know what size discs the Mk3 1.6 Sport should run? I'm going to be doing the 280mm conversion (along with rear disc conversion which is near enough 99% complete) and when I went to SEAT they said it would be 256mm as the only Mk3's that run 239's use a solid disc and don’t have ABS. However having a gander at that ETKA Online it appears they could be wrong.

Also if it turns out there wrong, I wont be a happy bunny as I already have the callipers, new disc's and pads all ready as I was told that the carriers are identical to the Cupra’s due to the 256/280/305 discs all using the same carriers. However, my only option then would be to source some carriers, how viable is this option?

How tasking is it to switch the carriers on the Ibiza’s, what else would need to be switched over? As for the conversion is there anything else people can think that’d I’d need? I presume I would need some new heat shield’s but I already budgeted for those, lines should hopefully be the same.

Apart from the above niggles I’ve near enough sourced everything I think I’ll need for the full front and rear conversion, I’ve got all the rear disc conversion parts I’ll need (and I’m 100% on this!) but as for the front so far I’ve got;

Front Discs (New)
Front Pads (New)
Callipers (Basically finalised a deal)

I believe the front brake lines should be the same, and all that I’m missing is the heat shields. But like I said above if I’ve got 239’s I’ll also need the carriers + parts.

They'll be 256's - I'm sure of it.

No hubs (there not called carriers) will need to be changed, just a simple matter of unbolting the caliper (2 bolts) and the brake line, changing the discs & voila.

Easy Peasy.

Good good, i'm lead to belive if it's 239's then the carriers need to be replaced for the ones fitted to the Cupra's. I too am positive there 256mm but cant be 100% certain till i take a wheel off to measure it.

Ahh well, if worst comes to worst when the callipers are here and painted if they dont mount up i know i then need the carriers. Least someone else think's there going to be 256's that leaves me with one less worry.

Did the rear axel beam arrive, if so you had chance to look at it? All ok?

Ohh and i refer to them as "calliper carriers" due to me been used to the phrase from bikes, but i think the correct term is wheel bearing housing

Rear beam arrived ok thanks, not going to unwrap it just yet until ive the time to weld bits onto it. :)

Does anyone know can I do the Cupra front brake conversion to my 1.6 Ibiza? It runs with 239x20 discs so I have to change the whole wheel bearing housing. But will my drive shafts match with the new wheel bearing housings? They are not too thin or something? If anyone could shed some light on this would be great! Can’t get any answers from the dealer nor from Seat Club Finland members.

And could anyone give me the part number for Cupra’s red front calipers? There are two options on ETKA but I can’t tell which one is the Cupra’s. And it’s not surprising that nor can the guys at the dealer.

Any help is much appreciated!!!

Thanks F2 Stu for solving the puzzle!! Now I can get conversion running. The re-aligning is on my to do list before the finish. I just hope that the camber doesn’t change much during the whole thing as it’s a pain to adjust.

Will have to paint the calipers if they come unpainted. But then they will not be red that’s for sure. Mitsubishi's Metallic grey might do the job. A little subtle but will have to check if it can take the heat. :)

Yep, carriers are the same as a cupra so just bolt up the 280mm set, or Brembo's... n the end my 1.6 has a set of Brembo's on the front and a Mk2 Ibiza rear disc coversion on the back.

Rear conversion you will need; Discs, Stub Axels, Callipers, Carriers, Brake Lines + new copper lines made up running from the flexi at the beam to the flexi on the rear callipers. Also be gentle with the ABS sensors as they can get fragile over time.
