Hey all, just wondering peoples opinions or knowledge bombs on increasing mpg. Everyone can quite easily reel off mods to get a bit more power, but I wondered how to save some cash at the pumps.

And I know some of you will turn round and say buy an ecomotive :bleh:

So yeah let's hear them :)

you can get an eco remap ,

i know these arent mods but keep tyre pressures up.

use V power fuel

keep your MAF sensor cleaned out

regular servicing of your car.

I thought that question wouldn't take long to come up lol

I bought a cupra and want to drive the nuts off it. However since then fuel has gone up 20p a litre. Also I can't drive the nuts off it all the time and want to use as little fuel possible at those times, like going to work where I know I'll be sat in a 30 minute traffic jam.

Crawling in traffic is a killer for any economy run, other than that basic stuff like keeping revs down, let the engine do the braking and nice and smooth on the loud pedal are your best way to keeping those mpg figures high, driving behind trucks on the motorway if you are into hypermiling to get every last drop out of your tank :)

Shift up early, accelerate smoothly rather than stomping on the gas, buy eco tyres, regular servicing, rip out the back seats, spare tyre (or any excess weight). Replace engine with 1.2 (j/k). At the end of the day it's a cupra, it was never designed for economy.

Don't use too high a gear !!

Sounds strange but these PD engines use more fuel when pulling big gears.

next time your on a reasonable 40mph road try changing the computer to read instant mpg.

Try doing 40 in 3rd with a light throttle VS doing 40 in 4th with slightly more throttle to pull the bigger gear.

I have always found the lower gear and light throttle to be more ecanomical.

Have to agree with the above.

On my trip into work this morning just over 50 miles, I managed to see 52 mpg taking it really easy. I know the trip computers aren't overly accurate, but not too bad I don't think.

When you can see a red light or traffic queued up ahead of you, change into the highest gear you can get away with without making the engine labour (feels like its lurching, you know as you're about to stall) and just coast as far as you can before applying the brakes.

For example, I see traffic lights on red ahead. I'm doing 40mph, shove it in 5th gear and get out of the throttle. Leave it to coast until it slows to about 25mph, then brake and select neutral.

Helps me get 40mpg out of my 1.2 :p

Hypermiling ...saves you 0.000001 MPG costs you loads of stone chips and a chipped windscreen.

Yeah I found the high gear thing out a bit ago, seems that all I haven't tried is cleaning the MAF out. Tis on the todo list now :)

I found the worst thing about hypermiling when I tried it once on my old car was the boredom. Sheer sleep inducing boredom. Just wish there was something better for mpg in traffic. A good flintstones mod would have been good this morning, took me over an hour to get from one side of Manchester to the other :(

Cities = pap

I get peppered with stone chips anyway, I don't need to be behind a truck to have that happen lol. I've never been in a car before this one that seems to attract so many stray stones, it's like some kind of stone magnet if there were such a thing

1500-1900rpm change up.

Tyre pressures.

Think ahead, roll up to junctions in gear, try to avoid stopping if possible.

Millers ecomax diesel additive.

Keep air con off. Use the Econ button.

Keep her well serviced.

Changing driving style is by far the best thing for better MPG. I have a driving style for good MPG and also a driving style for getting from A to B quicker. Just select the one you want.

Just for info :

I have just done a round trip of :
Preston to Ashford in kent - then over to margate and return back to Preston

The tank was brimmed before setting off and the complete journey of 631 miles was completed on the same tank of fuel.

trip computer still shows 40 miles left to go before no fuel and the warning light is not yet on.

No it wasn't driven like miss daisy and I don't have cruise control.

Yes I picked my travel time for clear roads (3.30am set off) and I let the car sit between an indicated 70 to 80 mph on a mostly motorway route.

I'm quite impressed with that milage on a tank of fuel

Yip, impressive, I can only dream of such figures
