Hey all, just wondering peoples opinions or knowledge bombs on increasing mpg. Everyone can quite easily reel off mods to get a bit more power, but I wondered how to save some cash at the pumps.
And I know some of you will turn round and say buy an ecomotive
So yeah let's hear them![]()
Don't use too high a gear !!
Sounds strange but these PD engines use more fuel when pulling big gears.
next time your on a reasonable 40mph road try changing the computer to read instant mpg.
Try doing 40 in 3rd with a light throttle VS doing 40 in 4th with slightly more throttle to pull the bigger gear.
I have always found the lower gear and light throttle to be more ecanomical.
Crawling in traffic is a killer for any economy run, other than that basic stuff like keeping revs down, let the engine do the braking and nice and smooth on the loud pedal are your best way to keeping those mpg figures high, driving behind trucks on the motorway if you are into hypermiling to get every last drop out of your tank![]()
Hypermiling ...saves you 0.000001 MPG costs you loads of stone chips and a chipped windscreen.
Although I'm leaning towards hijacking a fuel tanker![]()

Just for info :
I have just done a round trip of :
Preston to Ashford in kent - then over to margate and return back to Preston
The tank was brimmed before setting off and the complete journey of 631 miles was completed on the same tank of fuel.
trip computer still shows 40 miles left to go before no fuel and the warning light is not yet on.
No it wasn't driven like miss daisy and I don't have cruise control.
Yes I picked my travel time for clear roads (3.30am set off) and I let the car sit between an indicated 70 to 80 mph on a mostly motorway route.
I'm quite impressed with that milage on a tank of fuel
