More cold starting problems

I have recently started to have a problem with my Leon 1.6 SX.

Every morning it won't start. The engine turnes over, it fires, but doesn't catch, so I have to try again and again and again until I eventually end up bumping it down the road. the battery seems healthy, as it continues to turn the engine over.

A couple of days ago, I thought I had found the knack, as when I had the accelerator pedal pushed all the way to the floor, it would start. Unfortunately, this morning that did not work, and I had to bump it again.

Once the car has started, it's fine all day. I have checked and cleaned the spark plugs, but this has not made any difference.

As far as I am aware, there have only been two things that have changed since this started playing up.

1. I put premium unleaded in it instead of the normal unleaded (and I haven't had to fill up again since).

2. The temperature has dropped below 0 degrees.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had similar on my 1.6 sx, ran up to where it would normally idle and just died. Took it to VW and had a fault code with temp sensor dash insert (something like that, will check receipts when next go to car), fixed it for a week or so then it came back, showed no fault codes until it went pop a few days later. VW recovered me from the roadside for free and did some re-work. Turned out to be a MAP sensor.

Some people may also suggest checking the coolant temp sensor too, a search on here will give some info on that.

I know its not a complete list of everything it could be but its a few ideas to look at. Have you posted a help request in the Vagcom section to see if anyone can read your codes, will be loads cheaper than a garage

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

The coolant sensor was replaced a few months ago becuase it was faulty, so hopefully, I can eliminate that.

I do have a lead and the trial VAGCOM software, so will see if I can find anything with it.

The strange thing is that once I have got it started, it runs fine all day. I have just bought some cold start to try in the morning to see if that will help short term.

Thanks again for your help.

It sounds similar then, mine ran fine once it had started, it was just the having to turn it over 20 or so times to get it going that was annoying.

Other than that it seems a nice reliable motor

I might be off base here but worth a try, could be the starting motor.

Next time u go to start the car in a morning, while turning the ignition over get someone to tap the starting motor see if that works.
