Hi guys cant make my mind up right now :S

Looking for knowledgeable/experienced people that can advise?

I really want more power from my Ibiza, its currently Stage 2 Ko3s

I have been offered a Forged BAM engine with GT28 setup for £1800
Ill then have to get LSD, VR6+G60 clutch+flywheel, Custom Downpipe, Remap and Im sure ill want to upgrade the size of my intercooler + piping so in the end probs close to £3K

My current AYP block has 130K and runs mint! Is it a waste of time to do Rods, Rings, Pistons and Bearings + the obviouse gaskets etc? Am I missing any parts in the engine for upgrading to take more power there?

What suggestions do people have on wether to get a ko3 Hybrid with Rs6 internals and aim for 270-300bhp and only need a remap, Cooler, Injectors, Fuel press reg, Coilpacks, 3" Maf, LSD + Clutch. Or would you suggest going for a Ko4 and changing the manifold and downpipes on top of this? what power would that see?

Cheers. Tom.

How deeps your pockets? I wouldn't personally want to run a GT28 as a daily car due to the maintenance it would require, but a hybrid could be easily managed.

Can you explain this? What maintenance?

As a gt28 would be under less stress it's more likely to last longer! Whereas a hybrid is full chat most of the time, and runs so hot on boost it requires WMI just to keep temps in check...

how deep are your pockets? It's always the first question In relation to a build! And the second is, what is your goal? In terms of Power targets and how you want it delivered/ to be used. A track car you'll want tractable and smooth, however you may want a very spiky brutal road car...

Another is do you want (read: do you posses the skills and equipment required) to do the work yourself or do you want to drop it at a reputable tuner and have a transformed car returned to you? If the latter budget A LOT more money!

Doing most work yourself..
If your wanting to leave it in 5th n waste lambos you'll need 10k at least... If you want to spank m3s up to the very naughty side of 120mph then depending on current set up you may only need 3.5/4 k ...

Decent size frame turbos (gt 28/ gt30 etc) require a solid engine and will produce smooth powerful results...smaller hybrid units will make almost instant boost.. And can be very harsh/sudden in the delivery of torque. It's up to your preference..

What you think your looking for?

Thanks for the feed back guys!

First off it was my daily however I now own a suzuki jimny with 30K on the clock as a run around/offroader daily.

I am a full time mechanic and do have the skills to rebuild the engine, recently did the jimny as I hydrolocked it in a flood.

My budget could be whatever but I would want to work out a rough cost first, It currently sits at 230bhp + 300 ib-ft torque, I have spanked focus rs's, subaru's, civic's etc

I want more of a fast road/track car, not bothered about figures as I dont want to be all talk no trousers sort of thing!

I want good smooth/fast power delivery with out just a quick spike where it spins and doesnt go anywhere, hense wanting an LSD + Clutch whatever the route I take.

Power delivery is determined by map as much as hardware.. Just because its a hybrid does not mean its all at once power delivery or aggressive, Mapping determins what occurs if done by someone experienced in me7/hybrids etc

K03 hybrids max, 300bhp with supporting mods...
K04 hybrids max (our lupo recently) was 372bhp

Rods are advised as always by myself when asking a lot more from an old motor..
many are worn and tired these days... and often much of this is unknown until its taken apart to fit rods for example.

Some basic engine checked before hand, like compression and leak down will give an indication of health after which a more informed decision can be made.

Thanks alot for the info, would you be able to set up a max power but good progressive map badger 5? I have heard a lot of good things!

Whats your view on putting Rods, Rings, Pistons and Shells in an engine with 130K but serviced every 3K-8K Intervals? Over a lower mileage engine?

Ill try and borrow a compression tester from work next week!

who knows re you engine.
do leakdown And compression test and see what its like. Some high miler engines are the best, so you never know might be really good.

Rods I always advise when chasing the 300bhp levels...
old cars
high miles.

too many unknowns. luck is a factor. fitting rods is security

progressive is what makes for decent progress.... without wheelspin mania

OK cheers well ill defo do some tests and see how its doing now then I may just strip it down and examine it!

Do you have any particular Rods, Pistons, Rings, Shells that youd suggest? How much should I expect to pay?

Cheers where do you suggest buying the parts from? Direct? Is it worth doing the pistons? I have been to see the Forged BAM lump today and hes done everything but the pistons.

Chambers how come you have two sets of shells there?

Oh and whats the difference between the Tuscan rods to forge ones from IE?

Id buy from Bill at badger5. That's what's i did :)

I wouldn't bother with pistons if your not over sizing the block or stroking it.

I rang bill up and just order rods and bearings and that's what Bill suggested :) the mahle bearings are for the crankshaft and the calico ones are the rods. I believe the tuscon rods are the better rods iirc from research. Depending on your cash and if you can build an engine up I'd buy rods rather than swopping an engine in and out. But if the bam engine is cheap enough?!

Ok chambers cheers, yeh I might just do rods in mine then, the BAM lump is rods, rings & shells, come with gt28, 550cc injectors, highest flowing manifold, part of the downpour, oil lines, fuel pressure reg, coil packs, loom, done 120k before rebuild and 2.5k since and with the turbo. What you think for £1800 Ono?

Yeah it is pretty much, would need down pipe making up, LSD, uprated clutch + flywheel, remap, probably larger intercooler and piping.

I'm pretty sure he's being truthful as his mate used to own my car but I have asked for all the reciepts

It would be the little things like oil and oil filters it had after the engine was built and ran in I be more interested in my self. And all the little things you think of that could/should be done whilst it's all apart, shows how well cared for it was being put together. What running in oil was used and what mileage it was changed etc how any oil filters was used in te running in process. All adds upto a bigger picture rather than throwing some rods and bearings at a block and adding a bigger snail, if you understand what I mean lol

Least if you build it you know what's been done and how. Just my opinion any way lol as loads of people buy forged engines on trust, i sold mine lol

What Rods would you recommend ?

I use and sell integrated engineering rods which are rifle drilled
