Does anyone know any more about the 'agreed changes' that will be made to the MOT test as stated in the most recent Vosa 'Matters of testing?' (January 2011)

This MOT testers' newsletter seems to suggest that come next year they will be testing for modified engines? (see first para of page 9)

Quote:

In the last few issues we have told
you about changes to the MOT
test resulting from Directive
2009/40/EC, which is being
updated through Directive
2010/48/EU. Well, things have
moved on leaps and bounds over
the last few months and we have
now agreed and developed all the
changes that need to be made
prior to introducing them in 2012.
Of course, there is a lot more hard
work ahead of us – not only to
reprogram MOT Comp but also
to communicate the necessary
changes. All this starts now – so
watch out for a series of Special
Notices over the coming year

ive jusr recently come off my MOT refresher course. They didnt let on completely what was happening but did say that there is a few things that they are going to have trouble introducing at the mo due to not knowing how to.

I personally cant see how they can bring remapping into it. A proper remap will be well within specs of emissions so shouldnt be a problem. plus developing the equipment to determine whether a car is remapped or not is going to be a huge cost. afterall there is nothing illegal about remapping a car.

I do know that the EML will be part of the MOT from Jan along with Airbag lights too.

Its not getting any easier is it :(

The next thing is what about a decat ? which is one of the best things a tdi has going for it at the moment

Surely MOT testers should first get the current regs correct, without more things being added.

I recently bought a car with 5 failed bushes on it, checked the MOT from 400 miles (count them, 400) previous and it was given a pass, including 1 rear bush that was not even fitted correctly. If that's hard to spot then some testers won't be able to pick up a remapped engine any more then they can count their own penii.

It's all bull, it wont come into play at all with remapped cars. Stupid suggestion from them in the first place, just shows how stupid they are. Fair enough with the hid's etc

Harris, is an airbag light a fail from now on?

I thought an airbag light was always a fail? That is suggesting a safety device isn't working properly, similar to a seat belt not clicking into place for example.

From what Harris wrote it seems like they're adding EML lights to the checklist?

Spare tyre isn't tested either.

Edit: Other than "An externally fitted spare wheel or spare wheel carrier must not be so insecure that it is likely to fall off."

OK, so that is point number 4 that has caused me a failure where it shouldn't have! I got the failure due to the spare wheel being below minimum. I simply took it out and had it retested. ;)

As far as I am aware - ANY tyre on the car (even a spare if it's in the car) must be road legal.

If the spare is not there it will not be checked and can not fail.
