A mate had one of these which had a variable boost controller, at full boost it was around 160bhp and it flew.

Trouble was it kept blowing head gaskets, which at £100 each for motorsport spec ones plus labour made it very pricey. He also painted it yellow, and got it featured in fast car magazine.

A friend of mine also had a couple of these - really went like stink and were massive fun but you'd be hard pushed to find a rot free one these days!

my 2nd car about 10 years ago was a red Uno Turbo.
Ive always thought of it as one of my fastest cars but maybe it just 'felt' faster.
i never see any around anymore

It probably felt faster cos you were no more than a couple of seconds from certain death at any time! More adrenaline from fear than the speed...

You were hard pushed to find a rot free one when they were new :p

I had a red one years ago too.... bloody quick.

Had a couple of comedy moments in it:

1) So light that I got about 6ft air off of Slapton canal bridge, wind caught it and landed at 45 degrees. Messy pants moment.
2) Snapped cam belt at 100mph. Put a new one on and it ran fine for the rest of its life!
3) Dropped it into 2nd at about 75mph, rev counter went right around and hit the zero peg
4) Popped a banger in the slide shut removable ash tray and pushed it over to my passenger. Blew it to bits.
5) Poured lighter fuel into the rear ash tray and lit it for a sort of candle effect, did not realise that it had a leak and both rear footwells went up. None of my mates would help me put it out. (it survived)
6) Only car I've been done for speeding in (touch wood), average 103 over 2.5 miles.

Tough, fast, little motor

I had a (only slightly modified) Uno 1.4 on a K plate - Wasn't faster then my Leon, but by God it felt it - I think there was a fear element there as it always felt like it might combust at any moment.

Loved it though - no rust either :)

Had to get rid - it drank fuel like nothing else I've driven and with an 8 Gallon tank - refuelling just got dull.

I've just though of another one
7) I was a skin flint and cut the springs with a hacksaw to lower it. One fell off the strutt in the pouring rain one night.

ha ha ha... fond memories

I used to love the Uno Turbo. M8 had a tuned one that he claimed minced a 944.

The DEVIL in a box... Forking Fast... Thats it !

In general Italian Machines are not made to last.

They are not reliable in the long run...

Name 1 Italian machine that lasts... other than your coffee machine...?

Well, I'm thinking of getting a Golf MK1 Gti, but I won't replace my Leon either - that's not the point of all this really...

And I'd have a Delta HF Integrale really - if I can find one that hasn't been consigned to the rust bin that is...

My original Uno Mk1 1.0 Fire did 185500 miles and was still going strong on its original engine. The rust (on the door) and consumables which needed to be changed (clutch) became too expensive relative to the value of the car to warrant keeping it going.

So it DID last. It was 14 years old when I retired it, and I thrashed it (as much as could be I guess for a 1 litre). Serviced it myself too :D
