Just to give people my two cents on my new brake setup on my Cupra:

280mm EBC Ultimax discs
Ferrodo DS2500 pads

ATE rear discs
ATE rear pads (modified slightly)

First off, I removed all of the black surface material from the pad contact patch on the front discs, its quite thick, but an angle grinder with a scotch type pad on it made light work of it, vitaly without damaging or removing any metal from the disc, then some thinners to remove anything else that might be onthe disc.

The front pads already have a grove in the centre of them, so it was a case of stripping the brake setup down and cleaning thourally and rebuilding with the new pads/discs with copper grease in the appropriate places..

The rear pads needed a grove cutting down the middle for the gas/dust to exit, an angle grinder with a 1mm cutting disc took care of this. I also tapered the leading edge of the pad with some 40 grit paper to help them from locking/biting as much.

The rear stripped and reasembled much the same as the front, apart from winding the pistons back.

So after 200 miles of sympathic driving, no prodding the pedal, I took it out this morning for it first 'hurt session' on the new setup.. After that I cooled the brakes down with 10miles of not even touching them and parked up.. After an hour or so I jumped back in to see what they would be like after getting a good heat cycle through them..

To be honest they are quite simply the best front pads on a 280mm setup I have used, They bite as well as my previous Pagid FR's but are much better with no noticable pad fade, The EBC's I have before them dont even compare.

The light pedal application feels great even from cold. And just gets better as they warm up to operation temp. The real test will be Bedford in December, where some track time will show if they are as good as i'm expecting them to be. 9/10

pads are worse but yeah discs are crap too! experience here too :(

Did you have the turbo groove/dimpled discs? Or the new ultimax discs?

I heard mixed reviews of the turbo groove/dimpled discs..

cant remember was 2 years ago, never ago now, tarox 6 pots all the way :)

So what 280mm discs would people recommend (I was thinking of getting the EBC Ultimax discs), as I'm gonna be getting some grooved discs and DS2500's next month.
Thanks in advance.

I Just ordered ebc ultimax disc and ferodo ds pads for the fronts. Will have it fitted for next monday (MOT).

called bill from badgers all day and wouldn't answer phone!!!! Sourced them from somewhere else. Pads im sure are the dogs as bill and everyone else on here raves about them so much, the discs are fairly new (i think) on the market so lets hope ebc got it right.

As im aware, its the pads that are more important than the discs. Get decent pads like the ferodo's and you will notice a massive difference. Specialy on track days.

Pads are far more of the equation for getting front brakes right, As long as the the discs dont warp, they dont vibrate due to balancing and they have some way of dissipating the heat dust, along with the added bonus of being rust proofed.. All of which the EBC's seem to be excelling in...

Im very impressed with the new EBC discs, Grannted a bad experience can put you off a companys products, but 2 years down the line, maybe they have sorted some of their issues out!?

I'd recommend the them..

bill recommends the ebc ultimax and he's a man in the know.

I have ultimax with DS2500's and they do a good job (although mine seems to smoke a bit!)

The disk come coated in the black anti corrosion paint. The smoking is probably due to the oil or the black stuff burning off. Apparently after a few hundred miles of driving it should stop smoking.

Provided it is your discs that are smoking?....

Hmm i've had DS2500 on for a few miles now, certainly well over 600 and i've not had them smoking ... sure i've had them smelling a bit warm but no smoke. I've given them progressively more and more abuse and they just take it - again no smoke.
