Need a diesel gearbox i think queries inside

ibiza_95

1.8T MK2 Conversion
right several issues here...
my 2l 16v box is slowly dieing i think its getting a bit louder and doesnt seem as smooth as it used to but after seeing 130k miles im sure i can put up with it...

tho when it does eventually go i was thinking of replacing with a diesel box...

it needs to be a diesel box from a mk2 ibiza that would have bolted directly to a 2l 16v ABF engine, that i can use my original cable change mechanism with. ( Or perhaps a mk3 ibiza box i can use the cable change with? ) and standard mounts

At 80mph im currently at around 3.5k revs which is killing my petrol consumption, what benefits / downfalls would i have with the diesel box with regards to acceleration and motorway cruising? its a 1.8T engine and i dont want to loose any performance by fitting the wrong box...

just after some advice as im not overly clued up on gearboxes, and diesel / petrol boxes but i know that diesels have longer ratios for the shorter revving engines ;)

and what are typical ratios from the ibiza diesel boxes, so i can check what speeds could be achieved in each gear...

or perhaps a G60 box off a mk2 golf? pretty sure ill have the same short 5th issue though

Thankings

I think my diesel does about 90 at 3000rpm in fifth, i might be wrong though. I think its 30ishmph per 1000rpm. Its cable change etc too.

G60's use the 020 box

Some Ibiza diesels use 02A boxes, but the ratio's aren't what you want really... you'll really blunt your performance.

a full diesel box would be way too much to be honest - mine was great for cruising to work and back but not getting out of 3rd to break the speed limit and 800rpm cruising at 70 and changing down to pray 4th would get you up a slope was mind blowingly dull and frustrating.

would be good fun trying for 200+mph in a hooge turbo car one day though :p

depends on what box you have but why not check out this thread and change ya 5th for a sort of overdrive for motorway? wouldn't be so bad if matched up to the original diff

I assume your exagerating the 800rpm 70 flopper?

this might sound silly, but aren't the diesel boxes meant to unreliable? Mines done about 110k and its crunching in first & reverse and I've been warned about them before from a garage that specializes in vw, audi's etc....? (unless this means my clutch is going?)

as in in the region of 1000/approx 800 rpm no i'm not kidding it was near as darn tickover for under 70mph / was madness having to drop to 3rd to overtake at motorway speeds and could drive to work and back using 2nd and nothing over 3k rpm

the ASD box i had in was ratio'd for summat silly like 215 mph @ 7k rpm once my tyres etc were in the equation - all written down somewhere

bear in mind i had the whole box in mine so diff was horrendous which made it worse, with the right 5th gear chosen you could make a decent cruising 5th for sure as in the other thread there seems a few to choose

to change just take the end cover off and get the pullers out

Weird my ibiza tdi is doing loads more revs than that to do 70 more like 2300ish where did the asd box come from originally i like the sound of gearing my car down a bit.

the ASD i had was out of a mk3 golf Tdi - was hydraulic but bolted over the 16v conversion

must have been the longest geared box i have ever used ever lol

i have a ibiza 2.0 16v cupra and i find its gears are too long?
what smaller boxes fit onto the abf block people?
ideally i want lower ratio for acceleration in 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th gear but a standard or higher ratio for 5th for cruising as i do some motorway miles in mine currently tops out at 140mph which to be honest for me is quite ok but wouldnt want it to top out at any lower speed.
also if i could fit a smaller box e.g off a 1.4 would you put the 1.4 flywheel on and use a uprated clutch or what?
basically what are my options for acceleration after engine mods done fse 4 branch full stainless system pipercross induction and soon to be re-mapped would like all my wanted acceleration mods to be complete before map tho so its perfect would love 200+bhp

if you are gonna spend all that money getting 200 bhp why not look into a quaife diff and gear kit tailored to suit your exact needs ?

a 16v isnt gonna make 200+ with those mods..... And a 16v would eat a 1.4 box for brekfast. THey were only just strong enough for the polo 16v with 100hp.

Yep thats true, look at Daves Kiwi track car. He has cams and had some head work etc and he is just short of 200bhp. He is in the process of getting throttle bodies (I think ) and more aggressive cams which is going to give him over 200 bhp
