Some choice quotes:

" It does look very similar to the FR, though – and nowhere near as dramatic as the Supercopa Leon racing car."

"with an uprated Brembo brake system available as an option."

"The Leon Cupra should be on sale by January, with prices expected to start at around £20,000 – about the same as the 40bhp less powerful VW Golf GTi, but around £1000 more than the three-door only Vauxhall Astra VXR, and £2k more than the base Ford Focus ST."

Oh dear..

According to the display card on the show car Brembo brakes are standard, so I wouldn't take everything Autocar say as gospel.:)

The MPV comparison made by Dangel is perhaps closer to the mark but I think most peeps knew what I was driving at ;)

IMO the Leon Mk 1 is a much nicer shape (save for it's large behind) and even if they had gone more aggressive there's only so much a bodykit and large wheels can do for it. Shape might grow on me but it's not looking likely at the moment. Be interesting to see how they facelift it in due course

It's mentioned on the Autocar site now:

They mention side skirts? Prices to start around £20,000!

Is it me or does it say that Brembo brakes would come as an option ???
And a starting price of £20k without the Brembos???? Don't make me laugh. I can see SEAT selling 1 single Cupra in Britain (the one SEAT UK manager's son will get at a discount).

Though it’s probably just a base model that they’ve put the bumpers, wheels, etc on for the photos, it is a bit slack if you ask me.

The MPV argument makes me laugh, its an inch taller, wow a whole inch, i have to stoop to get in the Mk2 Leon, the roofline is so low.

Give it a rest, you simply don't know what your talking about.

What can I say - in real life it's a nice looking car. very very hard to photo well though. all the curves pick up all the lights

Just been down there with the tripod taking longer exposure shots (mainly of the black one as we're in a yellow wash with press images)

Sorry, I couldn't resist being mischievous but I really can't see why the Leon is compared to an mpv but the Golf isn't. They are both hatchbacks, about the same length and height and with normal seating arrangements. I suppose the Leon will always be compared to the Altea though.

The official press release states Brembos are an option:

We don't know the starting price yet. I severely doubt it will be 20k. The R was described by the magazines in the lead up to launch as being priced around that. Then Seat dropped the bomb and it was a lot cheaper.

Edit: didn't see Z's post above. Yes forgot Brembos were std. on the uk models but not in elsewhere - they also had 17"s as std.

I'm not tyring to being arsey, it's just my opinion in terms of the shape. I didn't say it was tall did I?

The previous Civic was the same sort of design and that discounted it from my options when I bought the LCR just over 3 years ago

And the new Leon does look similar to the Altea (only lower or course)

Just uploaded them for you scott (and sent you the link to the dir)

uneditted, and some blurry too (ashamed)

Z's going to tart them up

I think colour coded mirrors will be a popular mod, it looks kinda funny on the black, and like a spare part on the yellow

I'll go & quantify the Autocar comments now for you.

Have they got the bonnet up M0rk?

To those of you expecting 4wd - get real, besides; it keeps the car "cheap" and "light" so I wouldn't really want it.

To those of you expecting fins, flared arches and other sticky out bits, again - get real, besides; it keeps the car "cheap". If you want those things, get the aero kit. Not everyone likes those things or wants to pay for them, that's why the the aero kit is an option.

Oh, and - I havent seen the design/concept brief, but I can't imagine it said "The mkII Cupra should be a step forward, but be priced as to make the difference between Timbo's current Leon and a new one less than his depreciation (minus the resale value of his mods)".

Eh up Timbo's on his high horse. ;) Better bring the kids in from outside, and lock the doors. :p

lol :) Hey, i'm just being realistic - i've always been the sort of guy to look past the badge and judge something on it's own merits. It's why I bought my Leon in the first place - for the price i paid it's a cracking car and the fact that both you and I still own one is a testament to just that.

I think my points are valid - it is certainly a more expensive car, less distinctive and isn't perhaps the evolution some of us (not just me!) were hoping for. If it suits you down to the ground then all well and good m8 - i've no problem with that - but I should be able to be honest about my own assessment of it regardless. So ner ner ner ner ner :)
