Needs these Chinese prices on European EVs. 400+ mile rang. Xpeng tie up with VW.

IMHO Chinese-comparable retail prices on Euro EV’s would certainly help increase the consumer adoption rate, along with other factors such as range between charges and charging speeds quoted in the linked article.

As I understand it, the selling prices of locally produced EV’s in the Chinese market have been underpinned by very generous government subsidies. I doubt our current EV subsidies are anywhere near as generous and if they were, we’d all be contributing more to the government’s coffers.

Hopefully, Chinese EV manufacturers have considered the necessary after sales customer support structure (dealership network, technical knowledge within dealerships and spare parts availability) in their local market; IMHO good after sales support is just as important - if not more so - as an attractive initial vehicle retail price.

As somebody who is not interested in buying a new car ever I have to say based on feedback on this and other sites I also think reliability is key, it seems that VAG still have some way to go but then we generally only hear from the upset not the happy customers

Stubbled on a video of it now

Chinese video from a show.

On reliability may be the exacting Chinese may sort out the VAG groups reliability. Certainly changing supplies and arrangements of their software systems. They seem to be backing two horses at the minute that Chinese partnership plus the American one. The distributed brains. Probably splash the cash and take the one that seems best.

Reliability the Vag brand has suffered a bit in China as they deem their cars (Chinese) more reliable hence the Xpeng partnership. Skoda bless them are pulling out of the Chinese market. So I believe there are two partner VW factories in China.

Wonder what the local Cupra garage would make of it if you bought it as a personal import   . I hadn't seen before that panoramic roof design where you control opaqueness with a button.

On thing I really don’t like about the front end of many (most?) EV’s is the large surface area of the panel where the radiator grille would be on an ICE car. That large flat area must be very prone to stone chip damage. It’ll also get well and truly splattered with bugs during the summer months. The Unyx 08 is a good example of this.

On the subject of the Unix 08’s panoramic roof design where you can control the opaqueness at the touch of a button - Renault have developed a similar roof with glass manufacturers Saint Gobain; https://www.renault.co.uk/hybrid-cars/rafale/solarbay.html. Maybe other car manufacturers are also using similar technology?; if not, I dare say they will before too long.

I thought the good people of SeatCupra might have seen it before on the panoramic roof may be on a different car. Preserve running the blind across.

I get worried moving the panoramic roof on my Ateca in case in fails... the Tavascan is a fixed roof as this Unyx 08. I did enquire with my dealer whether they were greasing it during service. He said no. Others say greese it with silicone. Might be one of those things that get missed in service.

So yes maybe the Tavascan will get that solar dimming roof at some stage considering its made in the same factory. You never know.

EVs do look a little bland. The creases on the Cupra range now make the front look more interesting as the Tavascan. I did get the feeling from the video it looked like a white good rather than a car. Probably in a Cupra guise you would get more upmarket touches.

I still worry about pedestrians being hit by the flat front end. I am sure its some sort of crumple zone but we spent years designing cars to be more sloping at the front in part for pedestrian safety now we have gone back to the brick front.

yes i am a grumpy old man.

I think it would fail European NCAP if there was an issue. As I might have said my brother use to smash up cars with dummies in them wired up for de acceleration measurement and front crumbling. Family open day we all lined up for the crash of a nice new car with dummies and were taken for that 100mph spin by expert drivers... we hoped.

Now NCAP have those tests where a pedestrian dummy is towed out for a car to be run into them wired presumably with all the sensors and the car inspected. Not too sure how manufacturers do their testing now. NCAP is the independent tester, you'd think the manufacturers have their own testing elsewhere. Not where I went, that's been closed down.... no.

The electrochromic roof has been available on Audis and the VW ID.7 for a couple of years now.

Too posh for us mere mortals. Would that be the same glass manufacturer Saint Gobain. We got their glass in the house.

Does it stay dark when the ignition is off or light then dark. Makes a lot of sense to take moving parts away.

Anyhow @James_R does your dealership do anything with the moveable panoramic roofs. My front desk service guy said they dont. Doesn't tally with other user community experts that said they should be greeced up. Only use it as a treat on hot days waiting for a ferry, but a bit of a downer if it got stuck by the service staff not greecing it.

I've only ever seen the fancy glass option on a training vehicle at the product launch, I imagine it's too rich for a lot of people's budget. The vehicle was in a brightly lit room, so we only got the opportunity to see it change from opaque to clear, it was tinted to prevent glare at that point.

The panoramic roofs are a serviceable item, with their own check list of service activities and specific grease to be used.
A pan roof service is unfortunately a chargeable extra. It should consist of cleaning the drain channels, drain tubes and wind deflector then lubricating the frame, hinges and seals with the correct supplements.

Perhaps I'll ask for that. No leaks or wait for it to go wrong. He shrugged his shoulders. Probably they see few. As you say it was an option on the Seat Ateca at launch... did Cupra Atecas get them, pass.

Anyhow a nice touch for the fixed roofs but then I only open it parked up for ventilation. Also cuts down side noise in ferry lanes. Have the blinded closed the rest of the time. Kids are suppose to like them. Visually I find it distracting when driving.
