Ive done a search about this and there's a few possible causes...I'm having a whining type noise which I can only really hear when idling.

Video below..You can kind of hear it near the start

Any ideas? Maybe the alternator belt...it seems to fluctuate slightly along with the idle revs. If it is a belt, would they fix it under warranty?

Maybe i've got a collapsed timing belt tensioner fixation. But that sounds just like it!.

Hmm...my old MK3 Golf had the alternator bearing problem and it does sound similar to that.

Torquemonster: After reading your other post about the tensioner, it could be that. The revs do fluctuate when idleing.

I suppose I will take it in to stealers and hope they can fix it under warranty...really cant afford to pay anything out for it.

this sounds to me like a pretentioner and pulley problem get it sorted asap!!! and also ask for a new water pump impellor as they use a crap plastic 1 as standard and the impellors break off and the coolant doesnt pump and can over heat block and cause silly amounts of damage they replace it for a metal 1. they should put a new cambelt on for you as well!

BUT BE AWARE my car went in for exact same work and when i got the car back the cambelt was on wrong and this is what dameaged my turbo and MADE ME :D go bigger turbo

Cool, well the warranty is up at the end of December so will get it booked in asap! I'll try and get the water pump done too but the dealers I use is really bad so probably not much chance of that lol.

Rash did yours go in for the noise or just the water pump then?

I noticed a slighlty louder turbo-like whine recently...thought it sounded quite good actually but maybe this could be another sympton of the problem

mine went in for a squeek/wine it would rev fine for a little bit (2 seconds) then would give a quick squeek/wine then do it again and again and again ect its precaution for seat to change cambelt and implellor and tentioner so they have to!

I will make it next time! Not happy about the noise as warranty is up in a few weeks and then stealers will find a problem and charge me a fortune to fix it :(

frost in shorehsami havent ever used ive only bought parts from there ;) but i cant recommend any good seat garages as imo there isnt 1!!!!

They have sold me the wrong oil for my old PD160 in the past, and have heard bad things about them from others. I think there is a place in Haywards Heath that I might try out.

your alternator pulley has a clutch on it these go which are as common as muck that is your problem, done one today as it happens:)

Cheers goble, I might quote you on that at stealers tomorrow lol. If only I lived in Jersey...

hayward heath is DYER! dont even think about it customer service is TERRIBLE never ring you never have courtacy cars and they put my cambelt on wrong :ban: a deffo no no!!!! gatwick is OK

goble: is it not just the TDIs that have the alternator clutch? I've been google-ing and read something about that somewhere. Does the sound in the vid clip sound like this then?

Sorry mate, I just want to go in to dealers with as much ammo as possible. :)
