Noisy steering rack.

Cars been in today for new steering rake after doing 2300 miles since delivery. Also got a new drivers door mirror after the original's motor failed to fold it in. Must say was quite impressed with the dealer too as the car was in a **** tip when i took it in and looked just like new inside and out when i went back at the end of the day with its tyre shine on and fully hoovered. Shame the weathers crap!!!

In addition to the work it went in for they also handed me a vehicle health check form confirming what they had checked, Replaced a brake light bulb and all lubricants had been topped up, Was even more impressed when they gave me what was left in each container to take away. There was just over a litre of oil left and enough screen wash to top the bottle up again twice!! All for no extra cost.

Was well impressed on this occasion, Shame they won't budge on the £750 price they have quoted for side skirts and rear spoiler!!!

Took my FR in for a service last week, mentioned the steering was creaking on left hand lock at low speeds, they referred it back to Seat Technical, the car went in on Thursday for a new Steering Rack.
But I have a question, I'm sure the steering now feels heavier, am I right that I've read in a previous post that the steering can be adjusted ie: heavy, lighter etc ?

I went in to my dealers in Dec and they diagnosed as a new steering rack. They ordered one but the lazy f**kers didnt bother to call me to tell me it was in. I had to call them!

Does replacing the steering rack generally fix this then? I too was a bit worried about getting the car back with more faults!

I believe it can be yes, either via your dealer or with the use of Vag-com if you have it (or know someone that does)

I had the steering rack changed in my last car. After it was done the steering was a lot heavier. It took me a long time to discover why. There was a fault with the steering control unit. That was replaced which fixed it. Don't know if the fault was a coincidence or whether it got damaged when they change the rack.

either i'm extremely unlucky with my steering racks, or there's something more to this problem. i've now had two new steering racks, both times the noise went, but only for a month or so and it then returns.

i've asked local dealer to speak to seat technical again....

Had 3x Steering racks on an A3 140tdi Sport and 1x for an new S3 after 2,500 miles. Common fault i'm afraid.

Finally got round to taking the car in to have the rack replaced.

Took it on Thursday late so they could have it first thing on Friday, got a call early Friday afternoon to say that they had changed the rack and although it had improved, the problem had not gone away. They are now changing the top strut bushings and gaiters(??!!!). They suggested that they keep the car over the weekend and it will be ready for me either close of play Monday or Tuesday.

I now have had the pleasure of driving around in a Citroen C1 for a few days.

It has;
1.0 Lit
3 Cylinders
2 door
CD player

It does not have;
a/c (not realy a problem in Feb)
electric windows
central locking
bluetooth (as if)
electric mirrors
heated mirrors
height adjustable seat
MUCH BL@@D7 ROOM

The noise I have seems to come from the top of the suspension only on passenger side so could be same prob.
