Number plate lights blowing fuse??

Hello sorry if this is already covered but my 05 mk1 leon fr keeps blowing the number light fuse... original blows blew at first.. thought nothing of it so I put led ones in... still blowing the fuse... up'd from 5amp to 7.5amp blew that too. Put a 10amp in blew that.... bulbs are grand as they work all the time when I put a new fuse in...

The lamps (bulbs) will have a higher resistance than the fuses, which is why the fuses are going before the lamps burn out.

If you keep putting higher rated fuses in the lamps will get much hotter and potentially melt the light fitting.

I would suggest you have water ingress in the lamp holders or a poor connection that is arching out somewhere.

Remove the lights and clean up all of the contacts or buy new units, this should solve your issue.

+1 on all the above! Upping the amperage on the fuses is a fire waiting to happen!

Give them all a good rub over with some wet and dry paper to make sure they aren't dirty.

Look for signs of water ingress too.

Checked the inside where the bulb goes.. all clean and dry tightened the bulbs in a bit they where loose slightly now to check the actual connection...

Checked, cleaned the bulb holders and nothing still the same. Even with the bulbs out and I put a 5 amp fuse in bang when I switch the lights on to put the led bulbs in.... a loom issue possibly?

I had led bulbs in my car when I bought it. They were ok for a bit but then the fuse blew. Changed fuse a couple of times as it kept blowing so I put standard bulbs in and it's been fine ever since! Led bulbs can be a bit of a pain apparently.

Hmm I see tho it's blowing the fuse when nothing is connected.. like I had no holders on it whatsoever and it blew the fuse...

Oh right, very strange. Does the fuse only control number plate lights or multiple things? I can't remember! May be something to do with the switch or possibly a relay. Common faults are corroded earth wires. Have you done any electrical work on the car prior to the fuse problem?

Been like that from day one.. I traced the wires all seems fine into the rubber grommet and also up to the harness near the rear seat belt no crossion... I did have a leaky pipe near the seat belt in the left side from the window wash.. fixed that and a couple of wires that controlled the boot light all fine there they have been blowing before I even done that and yes it's a single fuse that controls the lights

Finally found the problem!! Bad wiring in the pillar where the rear washer tubing is to feed the rear wiper!! Fixed and all sorted thanks for the help guys
