I've always done an oil change on new cars after 1000 miles or so, regardless of whether the dealer says it's needed or not. (I often ask for a transmission oil change too for the same reason!)

There will always be a small amount of metal particulate in the oil (that is what "running-in" is!!) and so getting rid of it is no bad thing.

Similarly once the car has been run-in you cannot change the oil too frequently. Long-life oils etc have been developed to keep fleet buyers happy, since they have to factor the overall running costs of the car (including servicing) when they make purchase decisions; if they can keep those costs down by extending the service intervals then so be it. They are not bothered about how much wear the engine has after 30k miles since the car will probably have been offloaded by then.
