Oil Coolers

Im thinking about running an oil cooler for track, what are people running or what do you suggest?

Im thinking a mocal thermostat plate and a 16 row cooler.

Do you keep the OEM heat exchanger or bin it?

Any other parts needed apart from the stat, core and hoses?

Thanks.

On mine, 13 row, no water cooler, thermostatic sandwich plate, max temps racing 108'c
On BenS1's I fitted the other week, also 13 row mocal cooler, thermo, retaining water heater/cooler, he reported 110'C temps on track

stat, core, hoses, tail ends at whichever angle you want them... choice of hoses in braided or push on series 400 hose (arse to fit but work well and you can make your own hose ends)

as above on my ibiza mocal 13 row cooler with sandwich plate, can be fiddly getting on and off oil filters though unless you can get aftermarket smaller one (not as tall)

mine did go up to 120'c though on both ibizas i had but only when pedal is to the floor for a good run

Thanks for the info. :)

Lose the OEM unit and just blank or re-route the coolant hoses then i guess.

Smaller filter union part no. apparently is

Been thinking about getting one aswell,

Do you just blank off the coolant pipes or can you just connect them together?

And what thread (5/8" 1/2" etc) do you need for them as there is so many options??

mine is 14row without thermostat but with oem exchanger still on, i never saw any temps above 95c, the only prob is you cant use stock oil filter (too long), in your case with the SAI pump removed it might fit

Sorry to hijack but at what point should you consider oil temps too high and go for an oil cooler?

I saw max temps of 120 degrees celcuis when on track at Brands, but in January so low ambient temps. This was only after a good few laps, using Silkolene Pro-S 5w40. I decided to come in when it peaked at 120 to let it cool down

Hmmm, thinking I may need to think about one of these myself then as ambient temps increase this time of year... :(

Average temps were around 110 but it did creep to 120 after a few quick laps

At Snetterton the other week i saw a max of 110 degs. I have 13row mocal with thermostatic plate, braided lines and aeroquip fittings. Also got rid of the oem plate. No need for it. I run/ran millers 10w40.

Race TT with a 16row on the 24 hour race saw constant 115 degs. Even running 20w60 motul oil. Without the cooler it would see up to 130 degs on 12min sprint races!

Digging up old thread.

Im about to fit my 13row mocal kit with termostatic sandwich plate.

Where will the best location be to fit the cooler on the ibiza mk3? I was thinking above the FMIC but the cooler looks abit thick so it might not fit when looking from beneathe the car.

Was thinking maybe where the oem smic usally is fitted? Havent removed the bumper yet so it might come clear to me when its off.

I ran mine just above the intercooler (pro alloy cooler). The 13 row cooler will just fit. I will try and find a pic of it fitted.
