Why did you take it to a mechanic in the first place? Because of the loss of power or something else? Does your car have a standard airbox and filter?

it can be normal to see a little bit of oil on an air filter if the breather system re-circulates through the airbox, if its absolutely soaked in oil then id guess that its getting a lot of blow by on the rings and is forcing too much oil through the breather (would explain loss of power due to lost compression and excessive oil in the air filter) did the mechanic do a compression test?

no the guy didnt do a compresion test and its alot of oil in the filter doesnt seem to be coming through any more and the engine isnt struggling as much it feels like the throttle body is the only thing at fault now its going in to seat next week now so all being well it may be back next friday

clean out the oil breather pipe that goes from the bottom end of the engine to your air filter box, you will prob find its blocked with gunk n crap

same situation here, lot of oil in the air filter and very dirty throttle body. Maybe I'll decide to clean everything and then put an empty water bottle somewhere in the hood and put the breather hose in it so that oil will go in the bottle instead that in the airbox and throttle body!

i got a 1.4cl polo ...same type of engine ...same problem, i cleaned it out stuck a new filter in and its all good ...feels a bit sluggish again so i think i might have to do it all over again. there must be a permanent fix to this?
