I serviced my car a month or so back and as soon as i got under it i noticed there was a lot of oil and crap on the underbody protection, once i'd got it off it turned out to be coming from both of the intercooler joints as they were both caked in it.

Pulled both pipes off and gave them a good clean inside and out, also cleaned out the intercooler the best i could before putting it all back together.

Anyway, covered a couple of hundred miles since then an the oil level hasn't dropped. Just out of interest i took a quick look under the car and there is oil on the underbody protection again in line with the intercooler in joint (off side of car)

Is it worth me just putting a new o ring/ seal on the pipe rather than getting a new one?

Car is a 2.0 TDI Altea

Also would an oil catch can on the PCV make much of a difference?

The oil comes from the crankcase ventilation system, which feeds into the intake, after the filter. Fitting a catch can instead of the pipe to the intake system will stop that oil getting into your intercooler and the inlet manifold.

Oil leaking out of the intercooler joints indicates a slight boost leak.

I gave everything a good clean out again and fitted a catch tank, there was a bit of oil leaking after 300 odd miles but nothing like what it was before so i put the under tray back on and haven't looked since

Tank seems to be catching a fair amount of oil, need to improve my baffle a bit but i'm venting to atmosphere so not that worried atm

Edit: should probably add that i've also got some jubilee clips around the joints as well as one of them popped off, that's also helped things

so the catch can would sort the problem. obviously aswell as checking pipework. should the oil be in there in the first place.
im thinking about a catch tank myself. like you id rather it be caught that all over the under tray and my driveway. and if i dont see it on my drive then i probably wouldnt look agen either lol.i gave mine a clean yesterday and put card under overnight. no oil on the card this morning but just been for an hours drive and now put the card back under to see what happens

Any photos of what you've done?

What do you want photos of? I think i have some of the catch tank install somewhere

Main source of oil in the intake that i could work out was the PCV/CCV (whatever you want to call it) the only other source would be the turbo seals and they definitely shouldn't be leaking.

I did it for two reasons, there seemed to be quite a lot of oil in the intake before the turbo which could cause the veins to stick and secondly i wanted to make sure the oil after the turbo wasn't coming from the turbo seals

On top of the above the oil is only going to gum up the intake system and I've already had the intake manifold flap replaced, its not something i want to do again so the tank made sense
