Hey guys
Looks like my cupra has the same oil consumption problem as many of you have.
I've decided im not going to pay £15 a litre for the castol stuff as it is costing a fortune, so i just bought tesco's own brand 5w30 fully synthetic oil for £8 for 2 litres.
Question is how bad is the tesco stuff compared to castrol?
A guy at my work says not to worry about buying expensive stuff because they all have to conform to the same standard.
Any thoughts?
my consumption is about 1 litre every 1000 miles.
I think thats a lot, i have never owned a car that uses oil like this! I know the manual says half a litre for every 1000km but it will die down after a few 1000 miles.

Cheers
Ross

Is the Tesco oil manufactured to the required standard though?

Does the container say it conforms to the relevant VW standard?

Just remember, you normally get what you pay for!

It says it can be used on any seat, vw, audi and so on, but they all say that. Apparently comma is the company that makes tesco oil. Not sure if they are good or not.
Best probably to stick with what the manual says and use the tesco stuff as a last resort. Altho castrol pay vw money to have there oil mentioned in all there hand books.
Might see if i can get my car looked at at the seat dealer. But i bet they say the oil consumption is within tolerance!

Oil is oil, if it says 5w30... thats what it is. Might find it goes through the engine a bit quicker, but thats all.

I will literally put anything through mine..

You could also kick up at the dealer and get new piston rings thats meant to cure the problem. Mines goes in next monday cause i was sick of it and mines aint as bad as yours seems. Acceptable level of usage is upto 0.5 litre per 1000km :blink:

I wouldn't If it conforms to the bits on the back then bingo it goes in my engine, but i wont put anything in as oil is not just oil.

Like saying fuel is fuel!

As above. I only put VW recommended oil in. There is no way I put Tesco supermarket oil into these 1.4tsi engines. Some can be temperamental enough without any further excuses.

It's actually very simple.

Assuming it is a recent petrol car look on the container for VW specification 502.00 for normal serving intervals or 504.00 for extended servicing intervals. You can use 504.00 for standard service intervals too but it is usually more expensive.

All this should be in the handbook. BTW Halfords do offer a 504.00 oil - I've seen it there. Used to be about £20 for two litres.

castrol 5/30w

8 litres of castrol 5/30w edge can be purchased on ebay auctions for £55, personally i would not skimp on cheap oil, its false economy.

As said, I agree that what ever it says in the book is what ever it should get. The cars under warranty, last thing I want to do is give excuses for anyone to get out of warranty work. for now mine gets what the book says.

I've just gone for what they recommend. As im probably going to put it back to the garage for them to look at it. Like you say last thing i want them to say is they wont do a warranty repair because it has the wrong oil in it.
Cheers guys
