Hi Everyone

I have a 2008 Ibiza 1.4 sportrider. The engine light is coming on. I have had a bit google to try and buy a code reader on ebay, can anyone recommend a cheap one? also seen you can just buy a cable and connect to a laptop using ross tech free software? What would you recommend? Don't wanna spend loads of Wonga as ive got none :( ...... This did happen to me last year and the first garage just shook his head and didn't want the job the next guy said it was either the lambda sensor or the throttle something or other.. anyway couple of hundred quid later it was running ok and light was off. Could it be the same problem  I have a friend who is a retired mechanic who is gonna have a look at it but he hasn't got a reader. I know nothing about cars I only put petrol in it
Thanks in advance Dora xx

I second Badger's response. I bought one of the more generic ones from ebay that doesn't work with VCDS, and while it works fine, I wish I'd bought the one he mentioned.

Once you have it, scan for error codes and post what you find here.

hi this is the report. I have posted in the diagnostics but had no replys :(

I am googling the error messages and reading up as much as I can but the problem is a lot of it is stuff I just don't understand

thanks for helping me much appreciated :):)

Always consider that a Lambda sensor failure is quite plausible, B1, S1 is the one located in the manucat, if that fault returns, then only replace it with a genuine VAG part or the NGK equivalent - ie same item.

brill !!
cleared codes ran report got this.

cleared codes again gone... i know it will come back but am i right in presuming 17604 is the actual problem?

starting to enjoy this was terrified at the start

Had a look at that part (lambda pre cat sensor) looks to be £150ish is that about right?

Cheers

Everyone :D:D

£150 sounds about right for the front one. Try eBay and see if there are any cheaper genuine NGK ones. I got one for £60 because someone bought the wrong part and wanted rid of it..

It's easy enough to change. If you have a genuine one with a complete cable and plug, you can snip the cable off the old one and get a socket or ring spanner onto it. It will be welded pretty tight though, patience required!

When I needed one, I checked up online for NGK suppliers and found that I could get one at dealer for less than online one plus postage - which was handy. No cheap ebay unwanted ones when I needed mine, but you could get lucky. Remember only buy VAG part or NGK equivalent - which is same part, ready to fit but not in a VAG box! I did get a new unwanted EGR valve once from ebay though, not that I needed it at the time, but eventually I did!!

I think that NGK brand these parts under their NTK banner.

A word of warning, do not waste your money on a proper Lambda probe removal socket - in these cars there is not enough room to use that use, I found that out the hard way! I found that if I used two different types/brands of open ended spanners, I could get enough movement on one to use the other etc etc, also the probe was not seized at all, which was a nice surprise!

hi can anyone advise me please.

had new lamda sensor (proper one ntk). then the map sensor needed replacing. all done it was like new until I hit 300 miles (in 1 weekend) and the epc and engine light came back on. took it back to the garage tested wires etc for the map sensor couldn't find anything wrong. took it for 2nd opinion he said the map sensor was cheap and a bad fit. took back to original garage he said he used a soverign map sensor nothing wrong with it... Should I get another bosh map sensor and try that or am I throwing my money away?

these are the codes from vcds

I would suggest that you get a new proper MAP sensor, I don't think that VAG use a Bosch one on that car, I think it is a Magnet Marelli one T-PRT04/B or newer probably p/n 036 906 051.

Edit:- there are a couple on ebay - used correct brand ones for under £20 delivered if you feel lucky! Remember you need to see Magnet Marelli T-PRT04/B on the face of them, also the p/n 036 906 051.

cheers for that ill get on it

Dora

For what it is worth, I am normally against buying these sorts of bit secondhand, but, as I was having trouble with wife's old 1.4 Polo, I took a gamble on a used proper MAP sensor - and left it in the car, so while it did not resolve my issue which was elsewhere, that used MAP sensor seemed to work perfectly well for the final year or so we had that car.

I think that there is a "MAP sensor health warning" to give, if you feel like you want to clean it, only use brake cleaner, ie not carb cleaner as it has been said it might be too aggressive - and do not spray the fluid directly into it under pressure, all these tips come from others and not me, but I'm repeating them to possibly avoid you damaging the next MAP sensor.
