Piper Cat-Back System Rubbing

Hi Guys

I have a Piper cat-back system on my LCR which i fitted around 3 months ago, the system appeared to fit fine with the tailpipe sitting centrally.

The other day while looking under the car i noticed the exhaust was touching at the point where the bracing beam passes under the exhaust, i tried to manouvre the exhaust to fit better but it always ended up rested on there, I also loosened the brace and moved it as far towards the back of the car as possible (slotted).

Could it be I need to replace the exhaust rubbers? or may it be a slight fault with the production of my exhaust?

The brace rubbers on there are very soft although it seems like thats how they are supposed to be.

I have this problem with mine too, no matter what I do to try and make it fit properly it seems to sit where it wants to. Just lately this seems to be sitting against the red mounts on the brace just after the CAT. I’ve renewed both rear rubber mounts/hangers, and thickened the rear hanger up (the bar was too small for the hole in the mount) all has made no difference. I think the next step will be to heat the hanger sections and see if I can get the thing to fit right. This is easily the single worst thing I’ve bought for the car. I am now on my 3rd back box after the rusty tip scenario.

It just seems like the bar has been welded on in the wrong place as when the mount is sitting centrally in the two rubber its still touching

I had this problem on my LC ( i have the LCR cat back system) so i jacked the mounts up by putting four washers under the mounts, you can just see them on the pic.

That looks like the best answer, shocking really that they have been making the system for so long and never changed it, unless there was just an incorrect batch. Then again I suppose some peoples idea of a 'perfect' fit maybe different to others...

i changed the rear exhaust rubber (nr the beam) to the cupra r ones which are much thicker, stronger and slightly shorter which improveed things for me. if you do a search you should find the right part number. cost about £11 from tps.

I have just been made aware of this issue, Can someone please tell me more about it,

As i understand the mount is too low and causing the flanges to pull away from each other, is that correct?

If anyone has some more pics il see what i can do to get this resolved, and apologies for the trouble!

On mine the flanges arent pulling apart, it just seems as if the bend to take the pipe over the bracing beam is in the wrong place, causing it to rub on the brace, and also the bar which sits in the rubbers seems to be at the wrong angle, there doesnt seem to be any other way it can sit as its rigidly fixed to the cat, which is the oem original cat on mine.

Im currently in the office so ill resend the images when im home tonight. I assume it is the same as a normal leon although im not 100% on this as ive only ever seen the underside of my cupra r. Obviously the pipe diameter will be slightly smaller.

As a temporary fix i have raised the mounts slightly to stop the exhaust from rubbing which will be clear in the images, if i dont space it the exhaust rests on the brace and vibrates through the cabin.

So the bend in the pipe is in the wrong place? but the hangers/mount are ok?

Il have a look under my friends leon (its a 1.8 20V cupra turbo) and see if i can get a grasp of the issue.

Please be aware i do want to resolve this and not just brush it off and hope it goes away!

Hopefully we will get a solution to this quickly

Without photos its a little difficult to explain, but it seems as though the bend is too early, or maybe too shallow an angle meaning the pipe sits on the edge of the support bracing bar in which the mounts sit. Also when the exhaust is sitting perfectly central the little bar on the exhaust that passes through the rubbers is sitting at an angle and not central, which means when the car is driven and the exhaust settles into position the exhaust is pushed across out of position.

Just to confirm this is the cat to cat-back joint.

Also I have realigned the exhaust many times trying to get it to sit nicely , and had a VAG specialist look at, it wasnt a 5 minute bodge job.

I hope this pic's help to show the problem.

This shows how high i had to jack the mount up to clear the frame and possibly the ground, the metal bar/mount also had to be bent backwards a bit to fit in the holes as its set to far forward.

This one shows the angle of the pipe on the other side of the mount, it still sits abit to low as you can see from the angle of the down pipe but i couldn't get it any higher without the pipe hitting the under side of the car.

Hello All!

I have received some images of the pipe and i can see the problem, Im waiting to take a look under my mates Leon 1.8T (non Cupra R) to see if it has the bracket as well, if it has il get it in to the workshop and see what we can do to amend it and put it right.

If not i will need someone from here to bring a car down for us to look at, however we are fully booked right now and il have to juggle a few bits around to try and make some space.

I hope to have this sorted by the end of the month.

Do you guys mean it's knocking on the rear beam? (bar that runs between rear wheels) if so replacing the second to back mount won't cure it,

What I did to cure the problem was put two cable ties round the circumfrence of the mount rubber in a way that raises the back end of the system slightly and doesn't allow the bounce a knock of the mount.

Obviously this would be a case of how much room you have in the cutout for the tailpipe.
