Powdercoating Predicament

Hi SC,

I've got a MK4 beezer and when I bought it the wheels (17' split 5 spoke cupras) were repainted as part of the deal. The car has been used in all weathers and all commutes and over the past year the paint has taken a beating. I have chips all over the predominent centre and a heavy ammount of kerbage. (staring at things I shouldn't for too long)

I want to powdercoat the wheels gloss black but I don't know how I am going to get them there or how I am going to get around for two weeks. I'm not keen on doing one wheel at a time (my spare is an alloy) because that would take months.

As far as I know I can't put steel rims on because of the size of the front caliper and there won't be much point in getting alloys to put on in the mean time.

Don't know what to do - I've been considering getting a tidy MK3 golf I found on auto trader for £850, looking after it and selling on once the car is sorted.

Any advice, anyone strongly advising against powdercoating?

Hi

At some places you can leave your car for the day and pick it up the next. At best you are without your motor for a day and a half. Either that, or hire a cheap car for a couple of days.

No help to you where you are situated. But the folks that did my wheels, turned them round in a day and they are still 100 % perfect after some 8 months.

Good luck.

get hold of two steel wheels to put on the back while the two alloys are being refurbed then when there done stick the newly refurbed wheels on the front and get the other two refurbed so you always have alloys on the front untill the refurb is complete.

You are genius! two of my mates have steel spares so I shouldn't have to fork out much either.

Most places will do them in a day if you flash the cash. I had mine done in a day
Alternatively as has been said 2 steelies from a scrap yard for £30 and do them 2 at a time

I'm down southampton way, The powdercoaters are in Woolston and do anything metal, bike frames, compontents etc. A few of my friends use them regularly and swear by them. He's quoted £30 a wheel but I need to present them without the tyre. He Shotblasts and treats the item included in the price.
