How did I get started with this project?

I wanted something in my 5F Leon that wasn't so commonplace. That's when the "AirView" system came to mind.

First of all, the project is time-consuming, complex, and anything but cheap. I'm already approaching €1,000, but that's because I'm working with adapter solutions to ensure nothing is damaged in the OEM system.

The project isn't finished yet, but everything related to preparation should be complete, and "only" more needs to be installed.

The front camera issue will be left out for now because I haven't found a clean solution for it yet, but the rest is primarily important to me.

I'll discuss one issue at a time in different posts.

Example:

- Exterior mirrors

- General door

- Wiring

- Etc.

I won't mention any part numbers yet because I have so many and want to limit it to what's needed.

1) Exterior Mirrors

Well, nothing off-the-shelf fits, so I had to get creative.

I opted for the OEM mirrors from the Ateca/Tarraco.

Of course, they don't fit plug and play on the door.

So I bought the original exterior mirrors from a car that had been in a wreck.

The idea behind it was to modify the mounting base.

So I completely disassembled the mirror, unplugged the cable, and then saw how it worked.

I made myself a tool to separate the base from the mirror.

In addition, the LED from the blind spot warning system is moved into the housing.

2) The Door

Since I still had both original exterior mirrors from a wrecked vehicle, I made an adapter from the corresponding OEM mirror cable sets.

Why all this? The Ateca has a direct connection for the door control unit, while the Leon doesn't. Regardless of which solution you choose, either the connector on the mirror or the one on the vehicle side has to be replaced.

Another thing that needs to be added here is the HSP cable for the camera. So far, so good, but it has to run from the door to the interior.

This means that the door's pivot point on the A-pillar needs to be replaced.

The camera cable, however, needs to be extended.

3) Control unit with wiring

I ordered the wiring harness from AliExpress and picked up the module not far from me.

The original control unit on the passenger side is normally located under the seat.

I'm considering installing the control unit in the trunk; the cables should be long enough.

I also expected a small response, as it's definitely not a daily project...?

4) The rearview camera

The camera is a standard AirView camera, like the one in the exterior mirror.

The mount is OEM from Seat, which I think fits perfectly.

So, a little progress here too... the second exterior mirror is installed, with adapter cable and test drive cap. Put the glass in and test it...

I also have the first prototype of the bracket for the control unit. I want to install it in the trunk.

I still need to adjust the alignment a little.

Really interesting topic. I was thinking about the same project a few months ago but the front camera installation location withhold me from continuing. In my research I found a quite complete thread on a golf forum but I'm sure you also found it ;).

Regarding the camera's in the mirror I was thinking of DIY'ing it like they do on the golf forum. They basicly use there original mirror but modify the base and extract the lower parts with a heat gun and cutting tool to place the camera. Placement doesn't to seem a big issue because on the golf forum they found ways to calibrate the camera's without templates and modifiying the datasets with their real life measurements.

The rear camera should be a straight swap I think, since the leon already has a base and bracket which (i think) will fit the rear area camera.

An other issue I found in my mib2 research is that the 3D area images are missing for the leon. So that will be an intersting one.

I was looking into the possibility to use the (cupra) ateca front camera mount. But it seams the ateca has a bigger front grill. So maybe a DIY is needed to make it work.

I will sure be following this topic, are you also going to swap the door connectors for the ones with the hsd connector?
