question about water pump on 2.0tdi

previously i had a 2014 1.8 tsi but had so many problems with it over heating i ended up having to sell the car cheap to WBAC which was annoying as i liked the car, anyway im now interested in a 2017 2.0tdi but does this suffer with the same issues as from what i could gather last time round there is an over complicated system which is fairly common.

The 2.0 TDI does have a complicated cooling system with 3 separate circuits but, apart from some people suffering blocked heater matrices occasionally, it's pretty reliable. The pump itself is electronically controlled, there's a retractable sleeve over the impeller that moves back and forth to reduce the drag of the pump when needed but you here very few reports of these going wrong either. The only downside I can think of is that you need VCDS to bleed the coolant properly if you replace it so that's easier to let a dealer or good independent do for you.

As above - it's still a complex system but not terrible.

FYI - I've had the following changed:

• Heater matrix changed due to it blocking up (perfect since)
• Changed header tank at same time to one without silicant bag
• Water pump electronic widget/sleeve failed so had a `revised` version without sleeve fitted (did cambelt at same time)
• New thermostat and thermostat housing (done at same time as w/pump as didn't know if pump or t/stat causing overheat). It's a complete b!tch to get at to change.

Ref the pump sleeve - I've seen a lot of problems on a Skoda forum, so they do fail but not sure on the %'ages.

I never had my coolant fully drained or bled using VCDS - just got my mechanic to drop the main rad pipe off and drain as much out as he could. Due to a w/pump and t/stat change, most of it came out anyway. 18 months later and it's a bit cloudy in the header tank, so at the next service I'll get it drained again and refilled. Not perfect but I've never had an issue and the system is meant to self-bleed.

so they didnt change it on the facelifts or alter it in anyway? i had so many problems with my previous one it left a bad taste with SEAT in general which is a shame as it was a good drive.

Diesel & Petrol have different cooling systems.
Apart from the 'well documented' heater matrix blocking issues, I would not be worried about the cooling system in the TDI.
Yes it is complicated, but any modern efficient car will have a complicated electrically controlled cooling system i'm afraid.
The Leon cooling system is NO different to Golf/A3/Octavia/Passat/etc..etc...
