Quick Engine Question

Hi guys, im looking at getting a Leon in the near future and im gonna go for a nice diesel.

Im hoping to tune it with a map and FMIC etc etc, but i was just wondering if the same tuning potential is available for the 90bhp standard engine as the 110bhp standard engine? As i've been told the 90bhp version is a totally different engine?

Thanks in advance, Andy.

Yeh if you get the 110 because it has the vnt turbo so with some slightly bigger nozzles and a tune you'll get 150, bigger turbo and depending on which nozzles you have you can go further. Some of the 90's are like mine and have the wastegate turbo which is a limiting factor, if it's easier to get a 90 though don't let it put you off because it can get the 150 mark too but need to convert to vnt if it's a wastegate turbo. AHU, AGR are waste gate but I think just about all the others are vnt.:)

Nearly all the TDI 90 engines have a wastegate turbo, it's the principal difference between the two engines.

As far as I know, the only TDI 90 to come with a VNT turbo is the last one, engine code ALH. I assume this is because the TDI 90 model was still in the catalog but they'd run out of old-fashioned engines.

The ALH, as far as I can tell, is an ASV with a different set of maps in the ECU restricting it to 90bhp.

Nothing in a Seat that I know of. I think that you're most likely to find a wastegate on a TDI 90 though.

Yeh apart from the ALH for some reason, don't know why but maybe the wastegate's more reliable, it's easily good for 110 too so don't know why they chose the turbos they did.:)

The wastegate turbo is less efficient, you only get optimum boost once the wastegate starts to open and then you're throwing away power through the gate. They are less expensive to build.

VNT gets the boost up earlier in the rev range and controls it by varying the size of the vane opening. All the exhaust flows through the turbo all the time: it's sized so that the vanes are wide open at full revs.

Well I want a vnt that's for sure, been waiting on my mates vw sharan packing up so I can nick his lol, but the old banger keeps on going (and so does his car):D

I've already got someone who can chip the ecu and give me a tune for a ridiculously low price, just need the vnt conversion so I can hit the 150 mark. Mind you once I've done that I'll need a new clutch.
