racing on idle

i have an ibiza tdi on a 51 plate and sometimes when its ticking over the revs start to go higher, from 900ish to 1100ish, sometimes when i start it without any throttle on it revs as if i gave it some gas, can anyone tell me what could be causing this? thanks in advance

Possibly a faulty coolant temp sensor.

hi mate i also had this problem and i changed the coolant sensor which cost me £27 and was a real easy job to fit and know the problem has gone. I also use to notice that the gauge would jump from the 90c down to 0c when i was driving and the car was warm something to keep an eye on hope this helps
