I ve been putting off the rusty rear disc edges for ages now. Ive read the really good guide on here about removing the rear discs about a dozen times and in my head considered leaving the caliper mounting bracket on due to the stubborn hex bolts. Trouble is when i have to replace the discs i will prob have to remove it anyway.

In the end i went for it and stripped the whole thing as i was going to repaint the bracket anyway. To make life easier i purchaced a 1/2" 8mm hex socket which proved to be the correct choice as the bolts gave me no real trouble at all. Trouble did come from an unexpected simple act of removing the bloody wheel

Here are the pics.

Getting the rear wheel off was a pain in the A**e. Ive had a couple stick on before but not like this. There is only one way to get a stuck wheel off and that is apply loads of WD40 and kick tyre at top, rotate 45 deg, kick, rotate etc. Trouble was i was restricted in the garage and could only give it a kinda back kick. After 30 mins and many kicks and hammerings with a block of wood from the rear the wheel finally started to rock and then slowly came off.

This is the problem with the disc edge due to the VAG poor design. The rust builds up and you fail the MOT due to corrosion. Its a pain as my discks are not grovved and have plenty of life left so are going to be treated.

I was surprised to see a possi type screw and not a phillips holding the disc on !. It is
very shallow but luckly came un-done really easy.

The caliper bolts came un-done quite easy with a socket and spanner. Which left the dreaded 8mm hex bolts on the caliper bracket. The very good hex socket i purchase on Ebay for £6 delivered and was money well spent. With this socket i was able to not muck about and get right in with a breaker bar.

They are really tight and came loose with a loud crack There was no way you could turn these with just an allen key. On other threads folks have been confused as to the size and type of these hex bolts but they are deffo 8mm Hex.

Once the bracket was removed the disc almost fell off and i could at last get to work on that rust with a wire brush in the angle grinder.

About 10 mins later.

I then carefully (well best i could) coated all the non contact areas with KRUST which is a rust treatment. Once dry i repainted the hub rim (inside bit near wheel) with black Plasticote and then started to paint the caliper bracket red.

Whilst this was drying i cleaned down the caliper and painted that red. As with the front it took 2 coats to get a nice finish.

Then it was a simple job of putting it all back together. The decal was from the same set as the fronts which were £2.50 for 8 small SEAT stickers.

Good work, the rears have come up spot on :)

I'll need to replace the rear pads and discs, too much of a lip on them to fix it now unfortunately!

Thanks ;)

There is a great guide on here if you search :D. I deffo recommend the 8mm hex key socket to remove the caliper bracket.

Oh done them a fair few times over the last 8 years of ownership lol :cartman: Those hex bolts never stop being a pain in the backside.

Going to get some zinc primer or some silver/grey hammerite to do the unswept parts of the discs next time :)

I avoided using paint on the edges as iam not sure how it would react under high temp. Ive used the Krust (made by hammerite) for years now as it seems to bond to the metal. It held back the corrosion on my MR2's calipers for years till i got round to re-painting them. :D

Excellent :cartman:

I'll have a nosy at it when replacement time comes :)
