Rear Parking Sensors

Looking to retro-fit some sensors this weekend but just wondering if anyone knows off hand which cable to splice into?

From having a look it would appear the easiest option is to bring the wires from the bumber up through the boot air vents and then wire to the offside rear lights behind the access hatch. I see the connector going into the lights which has three different wires.

Going on this route where is the closest ground location as well?

TIA

Sounds a tricky task! Wiring the sensors off the Reversing Light wiring would be good, as the sensors will only function when Reverse Gear is engaged.

What do you get with the Kit that fits in the dash, to tell you how close you are to an object, is it a simple buzzer?

You could make a mint out of this - like those that learnt how to retro-fit Cruise Control to the Mk4 Ibiza's, splicing into the main wiring loom, then sold their services as a mobile installer to others. :)

Nothing fancy at all! Just standard rear parking sensors that you get off the likes of ebay.

Going to fit them in the square/straight section of the bumper to save having to get them colour coded. Just looking for which wire to splice if anyone knows from doing it themselves?

I have them in the lower black section of my FR bumper. 2 mins with a test lamp will identify the reverse feed, I cant remember offhand which one sorry.

One of my work colleagues bought a COMPLETE Rear Parking Sensor Kit from Maplins - only £45 !!
I was in his car yesterday and the system was working perfectly - he fitted the kit himself (4 sensors into the rear bumper).

I'm tempted! My only worry would be ruining the rear bumper while trying to drill out the holes for the sensors - then having to pay another £350+ for a new bumper/painting/fitting at the Stealers (would be just my bad luck).

EDIT:
I have obtained some more info. :) Sensors fit into rear bumper (no surprises).
There is a small control box that you fit into your boot. The sensor wires feed to this box.

Then, you splice into the + (power) and - (earth) feeds from the cars Reversing Light wiring, which powers the control box.

Finally, there is one long wire that comes out of the box that you route to your dashboard, where you fit the display unit that also comes with the kit. This gives an audible alert, when reversing, also has a set of bars to represent how close you are getting.

I fitted the Maplins kit to my Alhambra and found it to be very reliable and accurate, just picked up my Leon 2.0 TDI Sport yesterday and already have another Maplins kit ready to fit today weather permitting. The Maplins order code is A25FH and costs £39.99.

Remember though that the MK2 is canbus so you cannot just wire it into any loom!

You don't touch the Loom at all. You just tape into the + and - leads coming out of the Reverse Light circuitry (in the Boot). ;)

How much would SEAT (Dealer) charge for the installation of rear parking sensors - does anyone know the options price on these? Also where is the audible alarm located in the dashboard (or is it hidden/you just get the beeps)?

bmb779, how did you colour code the sensors to the same colour as your bumper?
(unless both your Alhambra and Leon are both Black)!

North Lincolnshire.
Halfrauds is a good bet.4 sensor system with rear view visual and audible display like I got for 200 quid plus 15 quid to have the sensors colour coded.
Plus a fitter comes and does it for you at home or your place of work.
Best 200 quid I ever spent.

If anyone is anxious about DIY drilling holes in a bumper, there is a parking sensor that doesn't require any holes. It works by using a metal strip stuck behind.

I'll just post a link to an installation video:
Parking Dynamics PD1

I haven't any experience of this product, just thought the info might come in handy for someone contemplating a parking sensor kit. I think you can pick these up from ebay too.

Alhambra had black trim at the bottom of the bumper,Had aerosol paint made up to match Leon as nobody seems to sell Emocion Red in an aerosol. The Leon sensors turned out perfect match.

How did you splice into the reversing light when the reversing light is in the hatch?
Did you go up the side and down through the hinge or something?
Thanks
