Rear Wheel Problem

Hi chaps,

bit of a problem...been across to wales today and car has been great..the normal motorway fun and A road banter. However, with about 5 miles left to go till i was home i heard a loud noise...metal on metal..not very nice.

First off i thought exhaust ! but as i was limping home it was coming from the passengers side rear wheel. Got it home and got my misses to drive it while i watched and the wheel is all over the place, wobbling everywhere !!!

i thought Spacers !! so whipped them off..drove it again but its still the same ?

The car sounds awful ! like the exhast and engine are being dragged behind it but its all coming from the rear wheel.

Any Ideas?




(will just mention too that the white 8v with 102k on the clock passd its MOT this week first time with NO advisors on it....NOT 1 !! and my well looked after 78k 16v gives me this sh!t !!)

i hope its somthing as cheap john...big weekend next week so just want it sorted NOW ! was going to that euro clean meet tomorrow but thats out the window !!

Oh and was planning to go to the coventry mega meet on wed's !

think i am just going to take it down to midland vw on monday morning and just turn up a 5:30 and put my card in the machine like i normally do.

I doubt it was the wheel bearing unless you have heard it humming for quite a while, I don't think its the sort of thing that just goes?! Did you hit a pot hole or something before it happened? Could have bent the wheel?

There has been a humming for some time but just thought it was the spacers as there not hubcentric..spose it could have been the bearing working its self loose....?its only on the one wheel.

Definately your wheel bearing gone mate. But couldv'e been caused by running non hubcentric spacers as they could have put your wheels on the car slightly off centre causing excess vibrations.

Thats what i was thinking...the spacers were a bit of a cheap experiment really but look like they have ended up cosing me a bit.

Hope it is the bearing.

Did both my rear wheel bearings for £4.50 each took me bout 20mins.

only 10mm dude...

The thing limped down to the garage this morning with smoke coming from the tyre where it kept jamming.....not good.

Midland VW think it might be the caliper.

could be the brake locking up

but sounds like the wheel bearing to me

yep, the ABS has thrown its toys out the pram big style...

felt like i was tring to brack with brakes made of gravel....

just waiting for that phone call now.

is it not jsut the sensor that need cleaning? if it is the ABS

ir not then bearings, discs pads and refit the whole lot just to be sure

the rear bearings go inside the brake discs, so you'll need new ones anyway just to be sure. And then a split pin goes across the front of the rear disc if i recall

Me too re: monkey expertise and even i managed to change my read wheel bearings! (ok it took me about 2 hours but i did it!)
