I've got a Garmin C310 and couldn't be happier with it. Got a camera database on for all fixed and known places for mobiles. Got it for £220.

Tom Toms are good units too.

Not over keen on Navmans, heard a lot of bad things.

I've got the navman ICN 530 and no complaints so far, really good, touch screen and i got it for £200.

Some of the cheaper units have problems locking onto satellites but mine is fine, picks it up nice and quick:)

I got a 510 from PC World the other day (order it on line then pick up in store, it’s cheaper) cost me £309. I have only used it a few times but its fine, picks up your location straight away and is very easy to use, it also has the speed camera database loaded onto it so it’s a big thumbs up from me :D

GPS on yer phone!

IF you have a nokia smartphone or similar then you may wish to have a look at mobile options as it works out cheaper.

I have a nokia 6680 so I opted to go for the following bits and bobs to make up a GPS solution:

Bluetooth GPS receiver (£39)
1GB RS DV MMC Card (£20)
Route66 Mobile7 UK - software only(?? about £60ish ??)

So for about £120 I have GPS.

here are the pro's and cons of this option, bearing in mind i have route66:

PRO's
-- cheap,
-- postcode searching,
-- ideal for totally unknown areas but if you have a rough idea where you are going you'll be bemused by some of the routes it takes you (but to be fair most GPS seem to like this)
-- can use it outwith the car (i.e. walking about)

CONS
-- voice commands are quiet (this can be overcome when using a bluetooth earpeice)
-- small screen
-- phone upgrade issues
-- no speed camera options with route66 (but there is with tomtom)

all in all it suits me as i don't use it all that often but it's there when i need it. remember that tomtom do a mobile version too and many prefer that but i found it more expensive and didn't know anyone who could .. erm .. lend me it ;)

another option for you or others maybe???

I've been using a TT Go510 for a while now, must add that I'm on my 5th one due to various problems, mostly windscreen mount connection issues.

This ones been faultless, not frozen once, unsual for Tomtom's. It seems when you get a good one its really good.

Can't beat them for features and the user interface is second to none. I use mine a lot as the bluetooth phone hands free works really well, and the camera database is usefull. I took it down to GTi international this year, and the Euro major roads are more comprehensive than you think

used to have a Navman 520, very outdated now.

had a Garmin Nuvi 310 Delux kit from Halfords in between Tomtoms. Good unit, nice and small, very stable, but the traffic master system hardly worked so it went back, and a minor point, the mapping looks like sausages

I use my Orange SPV M600 with tomtom software for my GPS. Just bought a tomtom gps unit.

I'd recommend Garmin unit or tomtom. Brother is a manager of Maplin store and said both those units are very good. In fact he said he gets more problems with tomtom's then garmin units although they sell more tomtom's.

I have a Garmin Streetpilot I3, Had it nearly a year now and it's a great piece of kit. It's got a small screen but amazingly east to read, has all the points of interest on it too including shops, attractions, speed cameras, traffic light cameras etc. I think they retail around £99 at the moment. Well worth the money and much more user friendly I feel than some of the TomTom units (and no stupid TV adverts either)!
