Evening all, my first post so be gently :D

Ive been looking around here for a few days now as im looking around for either an Ibiza FR TDI or an Ibiza Sportrider TDi and then I found the "Common Mk4 Problem" thread and it seems like theres a list of issues even from low mileage?

Are the Ibiza's really as bad as the thread makes out or am I just being paranoid?

Cheers

Ben

when i had my fr tdi i never had any issues whatsoever, bullet proof pd130 engines, i have heard some issued about sensors going on certain things but i never had any issues myself

Im expecting some issues, im not entirely unrealistic but ive read a few posts about slipping timing chains and that worrys me a bit. I guess im just trying to gauge the likelihood of these issues, im looking at getting a 2008 ish with less than 30k miles but all these issues seemed to occur at really low mileage

at the end of the day its luck of the draw, they are made pretty well and generally you shouldnt have any issues with them, but you will never know....

FR all the way! i loved mine, i miss it now :( awesome all round cars, great MPG good insurance and are pretty quick after a remap!

I've had a '54 plate FR TDi for 3 years now it's nearing 70k with no major issues.

Had the load signal wire problem which was a quick fix and the rear washer pipe popped off under the air box but that is about it.

Oh I have got creaky suspension and slight condensation in the lights but you can learn to live with those :)

The car is economical and a whole lot of fun....but not the most comfortable car in the world!

Good luck!

Go for FR! Tbh, it's more the 1.2 engine that seems to have the most trouble if not looked after (timing chain sliping, coil packs, timing chain snaping etc). As already mentioned, the PD130 engine is ultra reliable (any of the diesels are). I have a 1.4 100hp model and it has been very reliable over the 23k i have done over the past year. The trouble i have had is with the suspension (one reliability survey states that 56% of all problems on the ibiza are suspension related), it seems to be a weak point of the car (console bushes mainly). I have had several parts replaced under warranty with 'revised' parts and have upgraded the suspension myself and have no problems since. In short, a good little car that you should be prepared to shed out on some suspension components over time. It's also a bit rattley at times but they are always easily solved. Hope this helps!

Cheers guys, the FR will be insurance dependant but hoping it wont be much more than the 100bhp Sportrider.

FR is insurance group 8, the sportrider will probably be around the group 4 margin?

in fact im almost certain its group 4....

1.2 petrol lets the side down. Other engines seem very good tbh.

Ibiza does have it's niggles. But there are no serious problems that occur regularly.

The achilles heal is the suspension on the non cupra models. Snapped springs, worn out bushes etc.

Had my cupra 14 months and 15k miles now, and other than breaking a headlight trying to dry it out. Nothing has gone wrong touch wood.

Had my beeza 3 years :) no major issues, just bushes and suspension really. Everything else has been great, done nearly 90k

I've had 3 MK4 Ibiza's, a 1.4TDI, a 1.9 130TDI Sport and now the Cupra TDI. The 1.4 was an awesome little car, hardly any issues at all, the 130PD sport was a right b*tch and constantly had something going wrong on it and wasn't remapped, and the Cupra (touch wood) has been pretty spot on. So yes, luck of the draw with reliability, but in general, a good, fairly well built little car with shite suspension ;)

Had my FR 2 years almost. Only had the bushes replaced for the cupra ones and had a new fan belt a week or 2 ago, other than that - nothing major since I bought it (other than it blew a boost hose when I had it mapped - but not since) Car is on 140k.

had my 130 tdi sport for 4 years.

engine fantastic, suspension and standard bushes poor.

mines nearly 9 years old now and still going strong, i dont see anything better to change it for at the moment, for price performance and economy its hard too beat.

I had 3 Ibizas over 5 years and I never had a problem with any of them that I didn't cause myself.
The only problem I ever had was with the Cupras suspension... Or lack of!
It was like hitting a wall everytime I went over a cats-eye
