remote fob

The 16ver ive bought only came with one key...the non remote key. What are my options...is it best to install a toad or similar alarm? or can i reprogramme a new fob?
Sorry if this has been done loads...i did search but couldnt really understand

the remote part is easy just a quick programming sequence

hard part is the key blade which needs to be the Y shaped one to accept the remote + chip programmed to the immobiliser

personally i would try a local locksmith to see if they can clone you a 'remote style' key and then program the locking part yaself

ok, will try that..but how will i get beyond the imob? will the locksmith be able to clone the transponder? There are some seat remote keys on ebay...and i get that i can get a new blade and reprogramme the fob..but as i only have one key how would i duplicate the imob transponder?
any help much appreciated!

A mate of mine is a car locksmith, they can do everything you need, cut a new key, programme it etc.

But trust me it wont be cheap!

OllieL showed me is VW flick key he had done, its pretty smart, i'd get one of them.

The keys with blank blade are about £30 off ebay but i think you an get the cheaper.

yea i considered that but then im still in the same position with regards to the imob...arnt i?

not sure mate as my buttons on my fob dont work. I have a CAT1 with a seperate little button.

ok...so i went to timpsons and was told that my transponder couldnt be copied... hmph,

not all of them have the right kit to do it with mind as some just cut the metal

this place has the kit to copy em and can order a key in but only a solid one

i have the exact same problem and im well confused now lol, im guessing it be easier to take it to an alarm place and get an aftermarket alarm with rcl????

what ive done is bought a remote fob/key from a gti breaking on ebay (12 quid)and coded it in...now i need to buy a blank blade and take it to a locksmith that can clone the transformer. at least i have remote locking now tho

This one is the non remote or solid type key (the immob chip is inside at the base of the metal part) usually need to destroy em to get the chip out which is handy if you get a copied key or a spare one and want to 'make' a remote locking version as below

This type is the remote (or Y type) and is what you will need if you intend having a remote locking key as standard, the immob chip sits to the side of the Y section

the immob chip itself is passive (you dont do anything to it in normal operation) but will need to be either cloned/copied or programmed to the car correctly or the car will just for up for a split second then shut off when you attempt to start it

The remote control (buttoned bit on left) is a 'dumb' unit and is easily programmed to the car wether it is new or used previously, there is a few (loads now) on what to do and how.


note both pics for reference as the blades (metal part) might appear different on your own keys (ill edit pics to suit later )

yes swap immob chips over (i usually glue em in (1 drop) just in case)

you will also need a metal blade to suit or cut/drill an original

remote program is a toughie as you will need the right code+freq to program em and i never managed to find one - have heard it done though

ooh and big hands and heavy duty pockets as the flip key is heavier and more cumbersome when in a mk2 ignition - i went back to an original
