Had a quick search.. But canne find anything (Amazing how you feel compelled to write that these days )

Right, basically.. Starting to get my car ready to goto a bigger turbo, which over the coming months will be more stopping power and better handling.. Then onto the interesting stuff.

I've decided that intercooler will be one of the next things, which I'm comfortable fitting as I have plenty of support around.. However, I'd also like to change the turbo myself..

1. Just wondering if anyone has done this, what access was like, what they had to remove and how long it took etc.

2. Also, as every tuning companies website seems to be down or under construction, what price would I be looking at for just an uprated turbo?

Plan would be to do these bits myself, then have the clutch/remap done over a couple of days to finish it off.

3. Also read conflicting views on whether I'd be able to drive it there unmapped or not? Anyone done? Good/bad?

Ta!

1. Access is tight from underneath and the top tbh mate, removing basically as much as you can around it, and even bumper etc? Should take a few hours, however allocate a day!

2. I can only quote a rough figure for the TD2 @ £1000. Good for 260hp they say...

3. As you have said, some people do, some dont. I was planning to and was told it would be fine aslong as you dont give it that much grief, tbh id not risk it for the sake of it if you dont have to.

Cheers T. Spark!

Sure with the labour money saved you could more than pay for a trailer to the place of tuning.. So that's not an issue.

Maybe it's worth calling TD.. Wouldn't you have problems running 260hp through standard injectors though?

Be a while before all falls into place yet.. But keen to get some research done so I know what I'm in for!!

Turbo Dynamics do a range of hybrid turbos.
Set 1 - PD130

Stage 1 = MD345 = GT17 compressor wheel.
Stage 2 = MD446 = GT20 compressor wheel.

Set 2 - PD150
Stage 1 = MD374 = GT17 compressor wheel
Stage 2 = MD376 = GT20 compressor wheel

Stage 1 – MD374

Hi flow GT17 compressor wheel, cnc machined compressor housing, 360 degree thrust bearing, cut back turbine blades, lightening of turbine wheel for faster ‘spool up’, modified V.N.T. turbine housing, uprated turbine seals. Other ‘blueprinting’ modifications. APPROX 200 - 220 BHP

Stage 2 – MD376

Hi flow 2275 spec compressor wheel, cnc machined compressor housing, 360 degree thrust bearing, cut back turbine blades, lightening of turbine wheel for faster ‘spool up’, modified V.N.T. turbine housing, uprated turbine seals. Other ‘blueprinting’ modifications. APPROX 240-260 BHP

Stage 1 £925 plus VAT for new unit
Stage 2 £975 plus VAT for new unit
The above prices are over a year old now so might be slightly different.
No reason that you cannot run a larger turbo with a map that is for a smaller turbo as the ECU parameters will always be well within the safe limits for the larger turbo, the car will just not run very well.

RS Tuning have mapped several of the TD2 turbo's to 240-250bhp without any problems and no HUGE amount of smoke.

What have you got already uprated mate?

devonmikeyboy, you're a legend. That's spot on!
T. Spark, Not uprated anything yet really, only the exhaust has been done in readiness haha! Plan is going to be to try get the intercooler and turbo knocked off on a bank hol weekend, with clutch and remap sorted the following week.. Should be fairly doable with not a lot of breaks.. He says...
