Retiming after timing belt a tooth out

Last month i replaced the timing belt, scanned it for faults last night and its coming up with 17748 fault code.

I checked my timing today and found it to be a tooth out, the car still drives fine and no eml just a stored fault.

Do i have to strip it all down again, or can i just remove top cam cover and align crank timing marks, prize the belt off the cam pulley and move the cam pulley so the marks line up on the rocker cover and refit belt?

Any help will be appriciated as i think a few people on here had the same problem.

Thanks

You shouldn't really be re-tenchioning the belt.
Some people do, some people don't.
But it's adviced you don't.
Strip it all down.
Using the correct timing tools, re time the engine.

Thanks but not sure what you mean, you will have to relieve the tension to get the belt off. I've got the tools to relieve the tension on the belt tensioner.

So, set the crank to TDC with the marks on the lower timing cover and flywheel mark, remove belt, move the camshaft forward one tooth (its one tooth retarded) and refit belt?

You wouldn't get the timing out if you had the correct locking tools.
Yes you have to release the tenchion off the belt.
However it is advisable you do not re-tenchion the same belt.
By the sounds of it, your not pretty sure what your doing, so it may be best to just take it to a garage.
How did you time it up when fitting the belt?

There's no locking tools on a 20vt just a mark on the cam pulley and can cover and a mark on the flywheel and bell housing.

Re-tensioning a belt shouldn't cause an issue.

I'm just trying to find out if I can do it without stripping it down.

I timed it up by setting both cam and crank to Tdc. Put various markings on the belt and pulleys, transferred the markings to the new belt. Fitted new belt and made sure marks aligned. Cranked engine over twice to make sure the tdc marks still lined up which it did, but I'm pretty sure it's one tooth out.

My apologies, haven't actually timed a 20vt myself yet, but have done various other single cam VAG engines and have always used a pin in the cam sprocket, and a locking tool on the crank sprocket.

Need to really double check the crank markings as couldnt really see them today. But with the flying wheel mark centred in the view hole in the gearbox the cam marker was a tooth out.

Then the timings out.

Like I said before - sadly the 20vt only has marks not pin holes.

Yeh thought so, so best plan of action is set tdc at crank, remove belt advance the cam one tooth and refit?

There's a mark on the cam pulley so make sure it lines up with the rocker cover mark.

Yeh that's what I meant, find tdc on crank then move cam pulley to marker and refit. Thanks

Cool thanks will try to get this done Saturday. It's driving fine and ive don't probably 500 miles at least since fitting so I assume it can't damage it.

Yeh, im gutted, hated the job. Will have to do it asap!
Was going to do my rocker cover gasket, roll bar bushes, oil + filter change, pollen filter and a nice new dogbone mount on saturday, looks like that will have to wait!

Rechecked the timing again today just to be 100% sure. These are the pics.

As you can see in the last pic there is a little bit frayed and a small cut, going to fit a new belt now!

Yeah, don't know what could of caused that damage, I'm ordering a belt from euros now. They are on special for £16, looking forward to doing it all over again Saturday.
