putting wood under the peddle just means it wont rev high in higher gears, you could still refv it high in lower gears.

same here, did 5,000 - 62,000 in my 1.4, always on the redline and it was still running healthily when I traded it in, aside from a bit of gearbox whine
Is it possible to get my revs limited on my 1.4 Leon as I can't help but thrash it to go anywhere and I know one day it's just going to say no thanks and go pop. Ideally want to limit it to 4500rpm which will save it a bit. If not I'll have to put a block of wood under the go pedal

On a serious note, as said, if you look after the engine with regular oil changes etc the engine should be more than happy to put up with your punishment.
If you drive your car hard, expect bits to fail quicker. Even if you had a lower rev limiter, you'll probably 'thrash' it up to that point. As other have said, the only rev limiter you need is your right foot. I'm not sure a faster car would be the best way to go as some of your ideas has worried me if you should be on the road.
The 1.4 still has a rev limiter in the ECU though so what's the problem?
