I guess the whip part can be separated from the knuckle joint affair (i guess that is for car washes?) and then as a regular aerial thread to affix whichever one you like?

Only with force - it has an 'anti theft' device - essentially a plastic tie that keeps the two together. In a car wash, you put the aerial flat against the roof. You can remove the aerial by unscrewing the thread fully and then pulling it VERY hard whilst holding the bottom section to prevent bending the roof.
