You're gonna look a fool. The 40 or 45 is not a distance, it's a ratio.

Just measured my tire wall at 45mm, so this is just a coincidence

Probably yes mate

the 45/40 is the ratio of the height of the tire wall compared to the width of the tyre/tread....

i.e. 45 wall height on a 195 tyre will be roughly the same as a 40 205 tyre

The profile is the % of width

.....so the overall diameter of a 195/45/16 is

2(195*0.45)+(16*25.4) = 581.9mm

The overall diameter of a 205/40/17 is:

2(205*0.40)+(17*25.4) = 595.8mm

So the actual difference ? A 17" rim is approx 7mm more in the arch than a 16" rim, so yes it could make a difference if the car was in the arches with 16's on !!

That said I ran 17's with H&R no probs !
